🚀 𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐱: 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬   After two years of collaboration, innovation and community building, European Space Agency - ESA 𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐱 (𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬) has laid the foundations for a future where Earth Observation (EO) solutions continue to create value long after projects have ended.   As project coordinator, VITO has been proud to lead a consortium dedicated to making EO solutions easier to discover, reuse and evolve. By combining interoperable services, cloud-native technologies and FAIR principles, APEx is helping transform project results into reusable building blocks for future EO applications. While this marks an important milestone for the project, it is by no means the end of the journey. The need for 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐎 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 continues to grow—and the APEx vision will continue to inspire future initiatives and collaborations.   A big thank you to all our partners, Inuits, Brockmann Consult GmbH, terradue, Sparkgeo - Applied Geospatial ànd contributors who helped make APEx a success. 𝗜𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗘 🛰️ 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲. I'm pleased to share that the radiometric, spectral, and geometric calibration activities have now been successfully completed, achieving excellent performance and outstanding image quality. The figure below illustrates the same scene using different spectral band combinations, highlighting the richness of hyperspectral imagery. From vegetation and water bodies to urban areas and agricultural fields, each composite reveals different characteristics of the Earth's surface while demonstrating the excellent radiometric quality and geometric registration across all 135 spectral bands (VIS-NIR). This milestone reflects the dedication and expertise of a fantastic multidisciplinary team at VITO Remote Sensing. It has been a privilege to contribute to the calibration and validation of this hyperspectral mission, and I'm looking forward to seeing the scientific and operational applications that IPERLITE data will unlock. 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 - 𝐥𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 🌍 🛰️ The 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐀 project has officially started, advancing the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions from African lakes through Earth Observation, in-situ measurements, and modelling.   African inland waters are a significant yet still under-represented component in the global carbon cycle.  ARTEMISIA aims to address this gap by developing improved, spatially explicit estimates of CO₂ and CH₄ emissions for African inland waters. We are pleased to share that VITO is a partner in AgriScienceFM – AI Foundation Models in Agricultural Sciences, a Horizon Europe project focused on advancing the use of artificial intelligence in agricultural research and innovation. 🧠🌱 Agriculture is shaped by complex interactions between crops, soils, climate, ecosystems, and human decision-making. To address these challenges, AgriScienceFM will develop open, trustworthy, and agriculture-specific AI foundation models that support scientific discovery and innovation across agri-food systems. As part of the consortium, VITO will contribute its expertise in Earth observation, environmental monitoring, data-driven workflows, and AI-based solutions for sustainable agriculture. VITO also attended the project kick-off meeting, held in Wageningen from 9 to 11 June, marking the start of this exciting collaboration. 🤝 Together with our project partners Wageningen University & Research, The University of Bonn, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), Computer Vision Center, Inria, Novelcore, ILVO (Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek), Barcelona Supercomputing Center, University of Nottingham, and McGill University, we look forward to helping shape the next generation of open and responsible AI tools to support areas such as crop monitoring, soil health, climate resilience, plant phenotyping, pest and disease management, and precision farming. I’m attending the 2nd Bonn Risk Finance Dialogue in Bonn this week, contributing to the session “Developing Innovative Solutions for Financial Protection and Pre-Arranged Finance” with a presentation: “Early drought prediction and monitoring for anticipatory action”.    At VITO, we are working on turning #Earth #Observation, #climate #forecasts, and #AI-based analytics applied for decision-ready services that help numerous institutions act before #climate #impacts materialise. ⌚    With the Early Drought Prediction Service, VITO is moving beyond reactive drought monitoring toward operational drought-impact forecasting, supporting earlier warning, better risk targeting, pre-arranged finance, and more robust risk-finance mechanisms. VITO is proud to lead a new Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) project, delivering enhanced global datasets on Surface Albedo, LAI (Leaf Area Index), and fAPAR (Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation). These are key climate variables for understanding Earth’s biosphere. 🌍 By combining multi-sensor observations and extending records back to the late 1990s, this work will provide nearly 30 years of consistent, climate-quality data to support research, policy, and environmental monitoring worldwide.
