About us

The University of Waterloo's Faculty of Mathematics connects theoretical advances and innovative mathematics to develop novel solutions to pressing problems. Each of the four academic departments (applied mathematics, combinatorics and optimization, pure mathematics, and statistics and actuarial science) and the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science offers programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. With more than 8,600 undergraduate and graduate students, 260 full-time professors, and 500 courses in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, the Faculty makes world-leading contributions and creates and attracts industry leaders.

Technovation Girls Waterloo is celebrating two amazing milestones. For the first time in the local chapter's history, a Waterloo Region team has advanced to the Technovation Girls World Summit to be held in Bengaluru, India in October 2026, where they will compete against top student teams from around the world. Congratulations to team Power Puck Girls, whose app CareCompass earned them a place among the world's best teams. Congratulations to team The Stellar Squad, whose app Community Care Loop earned them a second-place win in the intermediate-level division in North America. https://lnkd.in/gj6f5n6g

As enrollment period is coming up, another plug for the upcoming "AI Transformation in Organizations: Healthcare" course, open to undergrad (through CS497, MTHEL498) and grad students (through CS698). This course brings together students and organizations to develop solutions for healthcare challenges, with AI as a potential core component. An award-winning researcher from the University of Waterloo whose work in the field of statistics has helped inform public policy for more than two decades was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Dr. Mary Thompson, Distinguished Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Mathematics at Waterloo, joins 60 other Canadians included in the list of honourees. The recipients were just announced by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, Governor General of Canada. Thompson joined the University in 1969, teaching probability and statistics in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. An expert in survey methodology and longitudinal studies, she has advanced the analysis of complex data and championed cross-disciplinary collaboration. Since 2002, she has led survey design for the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project, assessing global tobacco control policies from its base in Waterloo’s Department of Psychology. Quantum systems are fragile. When a qubit interacts with a noisy environment, the information it carries can easily be lost, scrambled in such a way that retrieving the information is virtually impossible. But not in all scenarios. PhD student Einar G. has been exploring cases where quantum information loss can be reversed, taking inspiration from image generation models like DALL-E or SORA. These are known as diffusion models. They are trained by allowing an image to gradually be turned into noise, and then they attempt to work backwards from the noise to recreate a clear picture. Congratulations to Dr. Yu-Ru Liu, professor of pure mathematics and director of Women in Math, on her receipt of a 2026 Distinguished Teacher Award! Liu has been part of the Faculty of Mathematics since 2003. An accomplished number theory researcher, she teaches courses ranging from first-year core mathematics courses to upper-year and graduate level pure mathematics courses. She has also supervised a broad range of students at all levels, including more than 60 undergraduate research students and over 30 graduates and postdocs. As director of Women in Math, she has pioneered the Directed Reading Program (DRP), which pairs graduate students with underrepresented undergraduates and engages them in guided research projects, with the purpose of skill development and early research mentorship.
