Often I sit and ask myself, when humanity has witnessed the darkest chapters of its history, how did we let them unfold? This isn't about taking political sides; it's about embracing raw truths. I am from Gaza. A small strip of coastal land which is 25 miles long, 5 miles wide, and has a population of 2 million, roughly 40% of whom are under the age of 14. This strip of land is entirely caged, if you are born there you can not leave and if you are not from there you can not enter. 99% of the water is too contaminated to drink, and there is a calorie count on the food which is allowed to enter in order to allow for the minimum amount of calories so that individuals do not die of starvation. In the past few days, we have witnessed more bombs being dropped into what is effectively a concentration camp the size of Detroit, than have been dropped by the US in an average year on the War in Afghanistan. I wake up every morning and rush to check my phone to see, not if, but which cousin, family friend, journalist, or neighborhood was exterminated today. I see government officials publicly stating their intention to commit war crimes on people who share the same blood as me, and then following through on their promise. Every single day, dozens of images cross my phone of the lifeless bodies of children being pulled from rubble, and what remains of their family members crying over them, if any remain. These images do not make it to mainstream media outlets. And then I realize the answer to my question, you supposedly can not commit crimes against humanity against a people who you have been convinced to see as sub-human. Desperate voices I followed on social media sent out final messages, begging the world to witness their truth, their stories of pain and perseverance before their electricity was cut and the generators ran out. Many never spoke again. The place where my forefathers once laughed and loved is on the brink of total extermination, all while the entire world watches. Some people feel the need to disconnect from their phones in these times because they feel overwhelmed, others do not have that luxury of disconnection. This is not a post seeking sympathy or pity. My only ask is that you challenge what you hear, truly educate yourself, and when you see us represented as statistics flashing by underneath news headlines, you remember that we were human. “If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” ― Malcolm X
