Tysa Updike shared thisTysa Updike shared thisFor many people, it's easy to bark out orders, boss people around and create an environment of fear to get things done, but inspirational leaders are different; they have a great energy about them that inspires the best in you. They lead by example, show appreciation for their teams, and don't allow their position of authority to make them feel that they are better than anyone else. Becoming a great leader requires work; it takes time and effort. You will have some very challenging days; sometimes, you may even doubt your ability to lead. Dont be too hard on yourself; it's a natural part of the process. Never lose hope, hold onto your faith and continue your leadership development because every incremental improvement brings you one step closer to becoming truly an inspirational leader. Tysa Updike shared thisThis is why I champion female development for Sr Managers and Directors at Allstate. Increasing representation of women in executive leadership is something I’ll always support, untill no one cares if every CEO is female.Tysa Updike shared thisWhat's in a (CEO's) name? Back in 2015, the New York Times did a story about how fewer women ran big companies than men named John. It struck a nerve and merited a follow-up piece a few years later, which expanded the analysis to government and academic circles. Lauren Harris, a Stanford University economics doctoral student, recalls hearing about those stories when she was in high school. For a recent class project, she decided to revisit the issue. Recently, Harris told us about her research, and we decided to apply the Bloomberg’s data-crunching prowess to get a fresh answer to a question that, frankly, shouldn’t even have to be asked. In what’s admittedly a minor victory, the record 41 women now running S&P 500 companies no longer need to measure themselves against John, or, for that matter, any Tom, Dick or Harry. No single male name matches their number, according to our analysis of CEO first names in the benchmark index from 2015 to 2023. From politics to academia to entertainment, women are making gains. A dozen states elected female governors in November, the most ever. Women make up more business school deans than ever before. Beyoncé now has more Grammy awards than any other artist in history. Our analysis found another factor contributing to the declining dominance of John and James: There are now 186 unique first names that appear among S&P 500 CEOs, up from 133 in 2015. There’s progress in the top ranks of business as well: 13% of all new S&P 500 CEOs last year were female, up from 6% in 2021, according to executive search firm Spencer Stuart. Yet with only 8% of S&P 500 CEO posts, female representation in corner offices now is nowhere near their 50.5% share of the US population. “We still have a long way to go,” says Jennifer Rumsey, CEO of engine-maker Cummins. “This question, how does it feel to be a woman in this role, can cause you to question sometime: Do people think I got this role because I’m a woman? Am I confident in myself? What are other people thinking of me?” Men rarely ask that question. #people #project #research #ceo #womenleadership #diversityandinclusion #leadership #ceomindset #names #stanforduniversity #womeninleadership #femalefounders #csuiteWork Shift: Women CEOs (Finally) Outnumber Those Named JohnWork Shift: Women CEOs (Finally) Outnumber Those Named John

Tysa Updike shared thisThis session was exactly what I needed this month. Overcome with "busy", I needed to take time to reset on priorities and delete something. I deleted letting email dictate my daily actions. My mantra is that there is nothing more important in email than the work I planned I to do today. My favorite quote from Dr. Pam, "they aren't going to give me a Nobel prize for the concepts I'm sharing today, this stuff is well known, you just have to know it and incorporate it!" #email #work #prioritymanagementTysa Updike shared thisCreating space, focus, less being overwhelmed. On Monday, I am speaking to a group of female global leaders at a major Insurance company. It is the #capstone session of a year long program called The Year of The Career. My core message for our group: Create space - delete something. Weird? Controversial? Possible? As a #startup founder, a #careercoach, #ceomom, and regular human, this is a topic very personal to me. I battle the lengthy task list every day. My focus and the ability to focus my team is paramount. I also believe that being #happy myself is instrumental in the happiness of others around me - and this extends to my kids and spouse. The idea of deleting something is difficult. What, how, who, FOMO, and which thing!!! I don't have the perfect algorithm. What I do have is clarity that more and more is not the right solution. Ex: We host a quarterly networking event. It is a passion project and also, something I believe valuable to our business. A couple weeks ago, I cancelled our Oct event. I had to delete something - we were not getting traction in our RSVPs and the planning/executing took a lot of effort. Deleting has consequences. Known and unknown. We had to tell the individuals who had RSVPed. There is the feeling of failure. Many questions about the longer-term impacts. Does this hurt our brand and reputation. Hmmmmmmmm??? So many unanswered questions. Then, the otherside of the decision. One less planning effort. Putting our energies into some current, higher priority endeavors. Rethinking this event and working a different approach. Saving $$$ that it would take to host the event. On the day of that event, instead - I met with a NEW customer. We finalized our contract and plan. I had dinner with my kids and watched #legomasters! The week prior, I started an exciting new project that is revenue-focused. As we think about our activities, we benefit from being guided by priorities. Rather than doing 10 things, can I do 6 that have the highest impact. As I prepare for my session on Monday, I am thinking about these things - and maybe this will help you too. 1 // Do you know your top priorities? At the end of the year, if you accomplish X, that is job well done. 2 // Are your priorities ONLY business? Do you have personal priorities that you commit to. We are human and to be holistic, we must distribute the pie between our professional and our personal. 3 // Can you say NO to one thing. Is there something that you can, knowing there are trade-offs, take off your calendar. This is extremely hard. I do not do this lightly. Maybe it is a side project. Maybe it is a "volunteer" project at the office. Etc. 4 // Can others help? Simple example. My sons are now 9. We have asked them to walk the dog each day when they come home from school. Of course I or my husband can do it - and like the fresh air, but, it takes a little pressure off the calendar. Do and not do. Focus. #mentalhealth #careeradvice #archercareer

Tysa Updike shared thisBringing back Win Wednesday and Fail Friday for my team. We’ll be celebrating what goes right but I’m more excited to celebrate what went wrong. To try is to fail, not succeed every time!Tysa Updike shared thisMistakes will happen; it is inevitable; what happens after differentiates average organizations from great ones. When errors are made, our actions shift from doing the right thing to covering our behinds in many instances. Pointing fingers rather than accepting personal responsibility, hiding errors rather than fixing them, and allowing minor problems to become big ones because they’re inadequately addressed. Remember that mistakes are vital to our growth; we often put way too much pressure on ourselves to seek some unrealistic ideal of perfection. As the leader, let your team know that there’s no shame in making mistakes, and most importantly, you have their back when they happen. I have seen people in leadership positions duck and throw their people under the bus when mistakes happen, and this leads to mistrust, lack of inspiration and the fear to try anything new. The most extraordinary people in their felids have made countless mistakes; they didn’t give up. They persevered and inspired many people to follow their example; as Albert Einstein puts it, a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. Grateful… To have my number one mentor by my side, peers cheering me on, and leadership who genuinely support my growth and believe in my rise — I am truly blessed beyond measure. For every win I share with my #1 market and business partners that remain undefeated in the face of challenges. Your grind, resilience, persistence and heart inspire me daily. And my village — a supportive husband and best friend whose support is unmatched, a mom/grandma whose love and help strengthen our family, and a leader who continually pushes me out of my comfort zone and toward greatness. Its days like this I am reminded what a privilege it is to soar higher, break limits, and blaze trails alongside extraordinary people. Thank you with all my heart. Let’s keep going beyond and rising higher.

Tysa Updike liked thisTysa Updike liked thisI’m truly honored to receive the Spirit of the Eagle Award. While it represents the professionalism and excellence of Allstate’s top sales leaders, for me, this award really reflects resilience. New York has faced some incredibly tough challenges over the past three years, and this recognition belongs just as much to the agents who kept showing up, supporting their customers, and pushing forward even when things were hard. Their perseverance is what made this possible. I’m deeply grateful for the leadership, partnership, and dedication of an amazing team that worked tirelessly all year to deliver these results — Spirit of the Eagle winner Renee Gear, FSCP; Key Leader winner James Sturniolo; Vince Fusco; Kendall Vouyiouklakis; Edward Sorton III and John Seo, CFA. I also couldn’t have done this without the support and leadership of our FSL Vincent Ferrara, and our AFS Field Sales Director, Mark Pianelli, ChFC, CLU Pianelli. Thank you to Allstate , Troy Hawkes and Andy Garza and to everyone who has been part of this journey. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together — and I’m excited for what’s ahead as we continue to soar. #SpiritOfTheEagle #Leadership #Resilience #Teamwork #Grateful #SalesLeadership #NewYork #Agents

Tysa Updike liked thisTysa Updike liked thisI was only part way through watching my son's first T-Ball practice when it hit me..."I should be coaching." I'd never felt such a strong calling to anything in my life. So the following winter I volunteered for basketball, then baseball in the spring, and eventually football. It started as a way to spend more time with my son, but it became so much more. Sports are indeed a metaphor for life. And leading kids isn't all that different than leading adults. They are all unique, with their own strengths and areas for growth. While I coached team sports, helping individual athletes overcome their struggles and perceived ceilings, to achieve more than they thought possible, was what really drove me. Identifying and pushing the right buttons for each kid. This daily work, to help individuals reach their full potential, is what ultimately led to a lot of team success. Yesterday, my son and I's player/coach partnership ended after 10 years and 21 teams across three sports. He's on to high school now, where the professionals get to take over. We went out as champions, the last two seasons/sports in a row, with this final basketball team being the most successful one I've been a part of in any aspect of life (81-8 four year record, 46-0 in conference)! The wins and trophies are great, but I think I'll miss the post practice car rides even more. That is where we really made each other better, sometimes through tears, but mostly through smiles. I owe a great deal of thanks to all the players and coaches I was blessed to work with over the past decade. I am a better leader, coach, father, and human because of all of them. If you are ever wondering "should I get involved?"...the answer is "yes", always "yes". You will get way more than you give. #coaching

Tysa Updike liked thisGrateful for the opportunity to lean in and discuss how we are living into our shared values and honoring Dr. King’s legacy.Tysa Updike liked thisToday, we hosted our second “Blue Table Talk” in honor of our annual “MLK Week of Action” here at Allstate. It was an inspiring, unscripted panel discussion featuring some of our organization's top leaders. I had the privilege of facilitating this meaningful event and I can tell you, I walked away changed. Our CEO, Tom Wilson, kicked off the event by urging everyone in our organization to adopt an active role in serving others - both in our workplace and in our communities. Leaders like Olga Iris Otero- Brown, Jess Merten, Mike Watson, Char Ferrell Jordan & Amy Juknelis shared stories and wisdom on how Dr. King's profound legacy continues to shape our purpose and guide our work. Andréa Carter, our CHRO, concluded the session with a powerful call to action, reminding us of the importance of authenticity in leadership and the value of kindness and inclusivity. It was an incredible experience filled with impactful discussions about leading with love and inviting everyone to have a seat at the table. I’m proud to work for a company where these conversations happen, where purpose drives us, and where building culture is paramount to our growth! #MLKWeek #BlueTableTalk #Leadership #Allstate #MLK #MLKWeekofAction #WeAreAllstste
