Most soldiers spend a career mastering one thing. Lance Cornett mastered everything the Army put in front of him — and then went looking for the next harder thing. Ranger Tab. Sapper Tab. Master Parachutist. Master Freefall. Combat Diver. Long Range Surveillance operator. Ranger instructor. Delta Force operator. He built that qualification profile across 14 years — not because the Army required it all of him, but because that is who he was. Every time a door opened to something harder, he walked through it. He went to Somalia as a scout. He trained Rangers. He operated in the shadows at the highest tier of American special operations. And on February 3, 2006, near Ramadi, Iraq — inside a firefight that required everything he had — he gave his life. He was 33 years old. He was from London, Kentucky. And the United States Army named a training compound after him — because men like Lance Cornett are exactly the standard that compound was built to produce. His name was Sergeant First Class Lance Scott Cornett. Born on July 11, 1972, in San Diego, California, and raised in London, Kentucky — he graduated from Laurel County High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army as an infantryman in August 1991. He deployed to Somalia with the 10th Mountain Division in 1992 and 1993 as a scout — one of his first operational tests — and passed it the way he passed every test that followed: by performing at the level the mission required and then preparing for the next one. He completed two instructional tours with the Ranger Training Brigade — shaping the standards of the next generation of Rangers while continuing to build his own — and served with Company F, 51st Infantry Long Range Surveillance, one of the most technically demanding reconnaissance specialties in the Army. In May 2004, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg and served as a tactical operator within Delta Force's C Squadron. His full qualification profile — Master Freefall Parachutist Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Military Combat Diver Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Sapper Tab, and Ranger Tab — reflects a career defined by the deliberate accumulation of the hardest skills the Army offers. Each one is a separate pipeline. Each one demands a standard that most candidates do not meet. Lance Cornett met every one. On February 3, 2006, he was engaged in a heavy firefight with enemy forces near Ramadi, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He sustained injuries during that engagement and was lost. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Combat Valor Device, the Purple Heart, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. In May 2016, the Army dedicated Camp Cornett at Fort Moore — formerly Fort Benning — in his honor, housing the Army Reconnaissance Course Sergeant First Class Lance Scott Cornett. Delta Force. Don’t follow your passion. Follow your fascination. Jerry Seinfeld just explained life in three rules: 1. Bust your ass 2. Pay attention 3. Fall in love That’s it. We need to let go of the idea that we have only one great passion. This perfect thing you’re meant to do that will make work feel effortless and meaningful. Meanwhile, you do nothing because nothing feels quite right yet. The problem with waiting for passion is that: ➝ You pass up on real opportunities because you don’t feel the spark. ➝ You hesitate on good ideas because they're not "your passion." You just need to be willing to work as hard as you can with the ability you have. Don’t get stuck in the loop of waiting to find your passion! You can have an amazing idea that isn’t necessarily your passion. Does that mean you don’t execute it? Do you think every great leader followed only their passions in life? Or followed great ideas? Jeff Bezos didn’t start Amazon because he was “passionate about e-commerce.” He was fascinated by the growth of the internet and followed that thread relentlessly. Naval Ravikant didn’t wake up with a grand mission. He kept following what he was curious about, like startups, investing, systems, leverage, until a philosophy of work emerged from it. Most leaders I work with didn’t find their path. They followed their interest, stayed long enough to get good, and meaning grew from there. Seinfeld's right: "Make an effort. It always yields a positive value, even if the outcome is absolute failure." If you’re lost trying to find your passion, try asking yourself: ❌ "What am I passionate about?" ✅ "What problems do I naturally pay attention to?" ✅ "What do I notice that others ignore?" ✅ "What could I work on for years without needing external validation?" Figure out what it is that fascinates you, and follow it.
