Medical device sales is far more than selling products to surgeons. It’s being the glue. Between departments. Between workflows. Between every person inside a hospital or surgery center that touches your product. SPD. OR coordinators. Scrub techs. Nurses. Supply chain. Residents. Fellows. Everyone in between. You have to build with all of them. It’s knowing your product so well you walk into the OR and everyone in the room feels ready because you are. It’s making sure trays and backup trays are accounted for before every single case. It’s reading a room. Assessing personalities. Matching your energy to the moment. Some moments are about selling. Some moments are strictly service. The best reps know the difference. Cases started to flow better when I knew everyone’s name in the room. After I had coffees with the nurses and scrub techs between cases. Getting to know them. Not because it was strategy. Because at the end of the day you are on a team during surgery. So get close to your teammates. You can be excellent at selling. But if you can’t service and build relationships you won’t survive in this industry.
