Tory Hebdon posted thisI witnessed something truly amazing today… I was walking past the break room of a client company I am working with and saw two ladies at a table. One was kneeling on the floor and the other in a chair next to her. Both of them had their heads down. The one kneeling was offering a prayer, I imagine blessing and giving thanks for their lunch. In all my years in the corporate world, I have never seen anything so moving. I don’t know what religion they were, for me it didn’t matter. It gave me hope, put a big smile on my face, and brightened my spirit. It was beautiful!

Somewhere along the way the seed of an idea formed in my mind. It was - “I‘d sure like to meet John Maxwell in person one day.” Well, two weeks ago I received an email from Tricia Gleghorn, a director at the John Maxwell Company. She explained that Mr. Maxwell was coming to Boise for a leadership event and they were in need of a few people to help work the Maxwell Bookstore. Excitedly I agreed! Still secretly holding in my mind the idea of somehow meeting him, I went to work serving over 5000 people at the event. Toward the end of the first day, this voice I knew oh so well from the many leadership videos and audiobooks I had watched and listened to say “Tory, we want to thank you for all your help!” I turned around and there he was… John C. Definitely not 35 times for me yet but it has been quite a few as well. Seems like every time I read it it is a new book and I get more out of it!

To celebrate a successful project go-live called RISE, I surprised our core team with sunshine balloons and a note that read, “Thank you for RISE-ing to the occasion.” It was a small gesture, but it made a big impact. Tory Hebdon liked thisTory Hebdon liked thisAlmost one year ago, we lost my father-in-law. He was a steady, kind presence in our lives, especially in the life of my youngest daughter. The two of them shared a simple ritual: every time they saw each other, they exchanged a fist bump. That small, familiar gesture that said, “I see you. I love you.” Recently, my daughter wrote a school paper about her grandfather which included the fist bump, how much it meant, and how she misses it. I read her paper just days before the anniversary of his passing, and then something happened at work. Each morning when I arrive, I greet Philip, one of my colleagues. It’s part of my day to greet him with a “good morning, how are you doing today!” But this week was different. This time, he paused, lifted his hand, and offered me a fist bump. No explanation, no reason, just the gesture and a smile. And I stood there quietly stunned. Of all the days, of all the ways he could’ve greeted me, he unknowingly recreated a moment that carried so much memory. A ritual that had been living in my heart, resurfaced through someone else’s kindness. It reminded me how much human connection lives in the smallest things; how moments of kindness and familiarity can create an impact we never see coming. Workplaces don’t need grand gestures to feel meaningful. Sometimes all it takes is remembering to look up, to greet someone by name, to offer a smile, or a fist bump. You never know what memory, grief, or joy you might be brushing against. The people around us are carrying so much more than we know. Meaningful leadership and culture aren’t built only in meetings or strategy sessions, they’re built in moments like these that are quiet, human, and real. What an amazing experience it was to work with the Scouting Youth of the Ore-Ida Council. Over the three years of serving in this capacity, we immersed nearly 200 youth into an environment that allowed them to grow and learn leadership and personal development principles.
There aren’t many things more fulfilling than to begin working with an insecure teenager and help them blossom into a thriving confident young man or young woman with a firm grip on their future! -
