With Alabama One CU's acquisition of Peoples Independent Bank, Credit Unions continue their trend of growth via the acquisition of banks. This is still a relatively new trend across the industry, and is a polarizing issue within banking. Key to the mixed feelings is that Credit Unions continue to be not-for-profit entities, and are generally exempt from federal and state taxes. This key difference in tax burden can allow Credit Unions to lower fees and interest rates, giving them a potential advantage over their banking competitors. The days of Credit Unions being constrained by "Common Bond" are quickly dissappearing into the rear-view mirror as well. While Credit Unions were designed to serve specific, local memeber groups, many now use digital services to expand beyond physical borders and utilize diverse, and nationwide groups for growth. In these ways Credit Unions are now able to bypass geographic limits. Credit Unions continue to be member owned, with the end goal of serving the member and passing "profit" to the member in the form of savings and/or easier access to capital. SBA North Carolina District Office
District Director Mike Arriola welcomed U.S. Bank officers to the district office in Charlotte today. Business Banking VP Mark Stevens and Business Banking Analyst Stephanie Fetzer shared their thoughts on the bank's business outlook in North Carolina and beyond. Based in Minneapolis, US Bank is the fifth-largest bank in the country by assets with a growing footprint in the Carolinas.
