Tiffany M. reposted thisTiffany M. reposted this845 million reasons to focus on brand building AND product 💡 There's been a lot of talk recently of the death of brand building, and I think that conversation is often missing a crucial point (not to mention being thrown around without much thought or evidence). What's the crucial point you speak of I hear you say? That brand building, coupled with a focus on creating a brilliant product, is an incredible recipe for success. Don't believe me? Enter skincare brand, DRUNK ELEPHANT. → Started by stay-at-home mum Tiffany Masterson in her mid forties. → No investment money of her own. → Limited knowledge of the industry. → Numerous failed attempts at building businesses. → Told by brand "experts" the name wouldn't work. → Told not to focus on high end retailers like Sephora. → Did it anyway and sold the business for $845m in 6 years. It's an unbelievable story with an insane number of things any one of us can be inspired by, including age being irrelevant or sheer grit and perseverance or a brand is what you make it (good news for us at Düng). And it's a brilliant example of why focussing on brand building AND product is crucial. Scott Galloway makes a similar point on the Jon Evans Uncensored CMO podcast (May 2024): "Don Draper's been drawn and quartered. This notion you can have a mediocre product and instil it with great emotion and just sell a lot of it, that's done, that's over." I couldn't agree more. Consumers are too savvy. There's too much information at our fingertips. People want, and deserve, more. And entrepreneurs like Tiffany Masterson are giving it to them and capitalising on this way of being in business to huge success. The DRUNK ELEPHANT journey is a masterclass in fusing great products, with great brand building, and a lesson for us all. Tiffany Masterson, I salute you, and thank you for the inspiration. #brandbuilding #drunkelephant (Link in the comments to listen to Tiffany's story on the How I Built This with Guy Raz podcast.)

Tiffany M. shared thisThrilled and honored to receive this award. Thank you CEW UK !Tiffany M. shared thisTiffany Masterson , Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Drunk Elephant, is our next 2023 CEW UK Achiever Award recipient. Tiffany is a mother of four from Houston, Texas who, prior to developing Drunk Elephant had tried pretty much every “miracle” product on the market to help to address a variety of skin issues. She was a frustrated, confused brand-hopper searching for anything that would help. (Nothing really worked, and if it did, it didn’t work for long). It wasn’t until she started selling a bar cleanser on the side that she began educating herself about ingredients, how skin reacts to them, and what roles they play in a formulation. Tiffany identified six problematic ingredients, known as the Suspicious 6™, which she believes were the root cause of her skin issues. Frustrated by the lack of products without the Suspicious 6™, she decided to create her own skincare line eliminating these ingredients from them, with the focus being on high-quality, biocompatible ingredients that benefit skin health and this is when Drunk Elephant was born. Tiffany's mission has always been clear: to create high-quality products with biocompatible ingredients that cater to all skin types. Drunk Elephant's ingredient-elimination philosophy paves the way for a healthier, more balanced complexion and we are delighted to honour Tiffany for being a Gamechanger in this field and for building one of the fastest-growing prestige skincare companies in history. I am so grateful to be recognized by my peers and faculty for exceptional civic engagement and leadership during my time at Emerson. I couldn’t have gotten where I am today without the support of Brent Smith and Kimberly Lorusso and all my peers in the American Marketing Association Chapter at Emerson. Congratulations to all the other inductees!

Tiffany M. liked thisTiffany M. liked thisWhat a ride. Today marks 20 years with Sephora. I never for a moment imagined when I walked through the doors on 3/13/06 that I'd still be here - and how different the world would look - 20 years later. I've worked under four CEO's, led dozens of versions of my team, incubated and developed hundreds of brands, made thousands of decisions, sold millions of products, but always - in every era and iteration - the most remarkable part of all of it has been the amazing people (did you think I would say the free skincare? Because ngl that's also been great). I count myself so fortunate to have gotten to build a career in the best industry, at the best company, with the absolute BEST people ever - a truth that's more pronounced today than ever. To still see so many of the same lovely faces in the room all these years later is a testament to the amazing culture we have built together. Thank you to everyone (there are truly far too many of you to tag) that has been and continues to be part of the ride, I am truly in awe of your talent and brilliance and so grateful for you every day.

Tiffany M. liked thisTiffany M. liked thisAs an early brand adopter, I’ve carried Drunk Elephant skincare across three continents—always packed in my bag. These products have worked seamlessly for everyday routines, business trips, hikes in the woods, and a few oceanfront getaways. More than once, I’ve made a Sephora stop just before hitting the road. I’ve had my glow-up, and so has the brand. Now. Please Enjoy Responsibly. ✨ #drunkelephant #shiseido #skincare

Tiffany M. liked thisTiffany M. liked thisClosing out my DRUNK ELEPHANT career chapter with so many memories made and so much gratitude to the very best team. Stories like Tiffany M.'s are one in a million, and it was my job to tell it... talk about a daily pinch me moment. I learned so much from her about trusting your gut and staying true to your vision. I worked for the most inspiring leaders who taught, supported and pushed me- like Lucia (Lucy) Perdomo-Ruehlemann and Mary Skinner who welcomed me to the brand, and Betty Kim-English and Stephanie Reif who juggled so many hats with humor and smarts. Grateful for Chopin Rabin's words of wisdom that will be ringing in my ears for years to come-- not to mention her unwavering support-- which everyone knows is very hard to find but so essential in a boss. I had so many great peers that made me work smarter and laugh harder-- thank you, Natalie Haimo, Lauren Sass and Jessica Mann. And most importantly-- I had the very great fortune of partnering with the hardest-working and most creative team of communications pros-- thank you, Julia Eifert, Kali Tejwani, Shelby F., Brielle Bellew, Jamie Lynch and Whitney Bestwick. Whew! That doesn't even begin to cover the rest of the Drunk Elephant team or our incredible interns, external partners, editors, creators, agents, managers, vendors, etc. Glad to know the beauty world is small so I can keep cheering for you all, and hopefully cross paths again soon.
