When building time series models, you’re faced with many decisions: Which model to choose? How to capture seasonality? Should you assume linear patterns, or allow for nonlinear ones? ARIMA is often the default choice, but I recently explored an alternative: NNS.ARMA forecasting from the NNS R package. It’s a flexible approach that doesn’t rely on strict distributional assumptions and adapts well to complex data. Key features of NNS.ARMA: 🔹 Uses nonparametric nonlinear smoothing to uncover structure in the data 🔹 Optimizes over seasonal factors to capture periodic behavior 🔹 Provides internal validation and prediction intervals automatically 🔹 Can handle nonlinear and heteroscedastic series effectively The image below shows an NNS.ARMA forecast on the classic AirPassengers data, where the blue line represents the observed values, the red dashed line shows the internal validation, and the shaded area indicates the prediction interval. A Resource Worth Having on Your Radar Why I Keep Returning to #nLab for Deep-Structure Questions Every so often, a project forces you to reach past the usual #ML stack and into the underlying #mathematics. When I’m working through questions about #symmetry, higher structures, or how to formalize perspective‑shifting inside a reasoning engine, I find myself returning to nLab. It’s one of the few living references where #CategoryTheory, #topology, #HigherAlgebra, and geometric structures are treated with the depth they actually require. For anyone exploring the foundations of #AISystems — not just architectures, but the mathematical structures that make certain transformations possible — nLab is worth bookmarking. It’s especially useful when you’re thinking about how to encode #invariants, how to formalize multi‑view representations, or how to reason about transformations that preserve structure rather than patch over it. I’ve found it valuable in my own work because it provides the conceptual scaffolding for ideas that don’t fit neatly into linear‑algebra‑only frameworks.
