I don’t care if your kids interrupt our call. I don’t care if you need a day off. I hired you for a job. I trust you to get it done. You should not need to justify yourself. I care about the quality of your work, not how, when or where you do it. We’re not here to micromanage or watch the clock. We’re here to get results, solve problems, and support each other. My advice when hiring: Hire for attitude → Look for people who share your values and enthusiasm. Skills can be taught—mindset can’t Trust your people from day one → If you wait for them to “earn” it, you’re starting off on the wrong foot. Genuine trust fuels creativity and accountability. Set your expectations → Clarity in goals eliminates guesswork and ensures everyone knows what success looks like. Set them up for success → You can’t expect great work if you don’t give your team the support and resources they need to succeed. Let them get on with it → Micromanagement kills motivation. Give people the freedom to innovate, and they’ll surprise you with what they can accomplish Measure outcomes, not attendance. Value impact over hours worked. This year, our company was a prize sponsor for the Block Kids LEGO® Building Competition, an event that inspires students in grades K–6 to explore creativity, problem-solving, and construction through hands-on building. Seeing the excitement and confidence in these young builders was such a powerful reminder of why programs like this matter. I’m especially proud that our support extends to NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) and its mission to strengthen and amplify the success of women in the construction industry. As a lens for deepening our impact and as the key to driving positive, systemic change around us. Today Joseph Griffin, DrPH brought leadership and changemaking to life for us as our guest speaker. Students shared that Joe’s visit helped them see: • How consciously approaching conflict can actually deepen connection (“there’s always Tuesday”) • How leaders can intentionally center their team and their community in actions big and small. • How a network of changemakers, working collectively, can drive systems change. Joe embodies so much of what we talk about in class: courage, humility, and humanity. He showed us what it means to be a public health changemaker. UC Berkeley School of Public Health Youth ALIVE!
