“I worked with Dan at two different companies: RiverMeadow Software and Virtual Instruments. At both companies Dan was a top performer who excelled in many areas. First of all, Dan possesses the topmost quality of an engineer: He delivers results. Not only did he have the insight as to what improvements can be made to the current software or dev process, he had the technical expertise to come up with solutions and ensure that the work was completed, resulting in significantly better solutions. This involved architecting the software, selecting/implementing tools, doing hands on development, acquiring engineering resources, and educating the rest of the team. Dan was able to push things through and make them work. He has done this in many areas: development, test automation, tooling and release engineering, continuous integration, virtualizing the development and release environments, and improving development process. This all culminated in measurable results. In addition to having valuable domain expertise and experience, Dan also has excellent communication skills. He was very organized and precise when conveying his ideas, and he communicated with team members from many functions -- development, QA, product managers, R&D management -- and recommended the technical solutions. Dan has done many presentations and demos, about Vagrant, vCenter, Docker, Review Board code review practices, and more. They were effective demos and tutorials, accompanied by wiki pages and blog posts to get engineers at all levels to learn the concepts and get up to speed of using the new tools and workflows. Dan was inspiring. He started the Hackathon tradition at VI and came up with a list of interesting ideas for us to explore. He encouraged us to use engineering tools to be more productive and always offered guidances to do things the right way. It was a pleasure working with him and I always got a list of new ideas after having discussions with him. With the rare blend of technical expertise, communication skills, and leadership skills, Dan will definitely be a top contributor and an effective lead in any company.”
