I received a recognition of excellence for The Daily Gamecock, celebrating my contributions and lasting impact on the organization. My name is now forever on the wall in Russell House. The Daily Gamecock has meant everything to my college experience, and to be on the wall outside the office I have spent so much time in is an honor, especially alongside the names of previous winners over the years. I want to thank Sarah Scarborough, Sydney Cranmer, John Burbage and Krista Larson for hosting such an amazing event that showcased the amazing people and work in Garnet Media Group. It was a pleasure celebrating the success of all the GMG entities! A special thank you goes to Nat Campbell for selecting Miles Shea and I for this award and for all of her support during my time in the organization. Go student media, and let's continue to make our mark!!

Sydney Cranmer reacted on thisSydney Cranmer reacted on thisHey, y'all. Last month I was hired as a copywriter at Laudisi Enterprises in Loris, to begin in early May (giving myself some breathing room to finish out the spring semester at Coastal, for which I am very grateful). I’m excited for it, very glad to be back in writing after two and a half years and can’t wait to get started. This is, of course, not a journalism job, as I’ve considered myself checked out of journalism from September 2023 on. But, since I haven’t posted here before, I figured it’s time that I sit down and thank the folks from my time in journalism who made me a better writer and got me here in the first place. Those folks start with Adam Orfinger, who told me one day in 2017 while we sat in the The Daily Gamecock office to never again say it didn’t feel like there was much going on to write about, because there was, always. He was right. We still talk twice a month at least. Kevin G. Hall took me under his wing when I was an intern at McClatchyDC, and David Lightman taught me from day one the values (and the importance) of being a grown-up reporter. They both rock, as does the guy who sat at the desk across from mine, Ben Wieder, who has overcome being a Mizzou Tiger to distinguish himself as a wonderful person and journalist. Jesse Chaney gave me my first job out of school in Helena, Montana. He, Tom Kuglin, Holly Michels (and her equally awesome husband, John T. Cribb), and Maria Kirkpatrick and Cliff Kirkpatrick made my transition from living on the Atlantic beaches to living in the Rockies much easier and taught me much of what I know about newspapering, and for that I’m eternally grateful. Erin Slowey got me back to The Daily Gamecock as a copy editor during a brief grad school interlude in 2020 and rekindled my love of news. Her success at Bloomberg surprises me about as much as the sun coming up each morning. JEFFREY HARTLEY and Dan Shearer gave me a shot in Pierre, South Dakota in 2021, when I thought my career was already over. Elise Wines made me feel like I was family there, nearly 2,000 miles away from my own family. I need to get out to Pierre again, and soon, if only to down another rack of ribs at Richie Z’s or 2 a.m. plate of chili cheese fries at The Chuckwagon across the river in Fort Pierre. In Georgetown, Andy Shain always pushed me to hate to lose, as the saying in our favorite TV show goes. Charles Perry wanted me to get out there and talk to everybody I could whether it led to a story or not, and I still marvel at his ability and motivation to do so. All of these people, and many more, made me. I thank you all. Go Cocks. Sincerely, Mike

Sydney Cranmer reacted on thisSydney Cranmer reacted on thisIsn’t it crazy how fast a year can fly by? I never expected time to move quite like this. As of today, I’ve officially finished my time as Station Manager for Student Gamecock Television (SGTV). While I’m immensely proud of everything we accomplished, it’s bittersweet to see this chapter come to an end. When I first came to college, I started as a Pharmacy major but quickly realized after just one semester that it wasn’t the path for me. I shifted to Journalism, not knowing where it would lead me, and I’m so grateful that it brought me to Student Media. Being Station Manager has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. Serving as SGTV’s first Black Station Manager and having the opportunity to inspire others wasn’t something I anticipated when I took on this role, but it’s something I’ll carry with me forever. To my incredible SGTV team: thank you for trusting me to lead you this past year. To Sydney Cranmer and Sarah Scarborough thank you for pushing me to step into this role and for supporting me every step of the way. And to Garnet Media Group: thank you for giving me lifelong friends who will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m so excited to pass the torch to Delaney Flanagan, who I know will lead the station to even greater heights. This isn’t goodbye—it’s simply “see you later.” Thank you, SGTV, for everything. You’ll always be a part of me.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve been incredibly lucky to lead in both the content and engagement sides of the station, all while producing content and making friends along the way. To anyone who has been part of this journey, thank you! I have to start by shouting out a dear friend and our station manager, Nickolas H.—thank you for giving me these opportunities to grow as a leader! I also want to thank my incredible team this semester: Delaney Flanagan, Dakota Morris, and Reece Nolting. Watching each of them grow as leaders has been a highlight of my time at SGTV. I'm very excited to see what all of them do on SGTV's management team in the spring! I also want to give a huge thanks to SGTV’s staff advisor, Brett Williams, for his mentorship and constructive feedback on our content. I’m also incredibly grateful to Garnet Media Group’s pro-staff, Sarah Scarborough and Sydney Cranmer, for their guidance. GMG is so lucky to have them! SGTV has been such an important part of my college experience, and I’m so thankful for all the opportunities it’s given me to grow as a leader and journalist, both in the studio and in the field. This station will always hold a special place in my heart! While I’m stepping back from a leadership role, I’m very excited to start a new chapter as a contributor to the station. Thank you for everything, Student Gamecock Television! 📺 ❤️

Sydney Cranmer reacted on thisSydney Cranmer reacted on thisI cannot believe the journey that CMBAM - College Media Business and Advertising Managers has taken me on over the past three years. It started my sophomore year of college, coming in bright-eyed to the annual conference in Minneapolis, MN. There, I met some of the greatest people and mentors who encouraged me to run for the Student Director position on the Board of Directors. After being elected, I had the privilege to represent the student members of CMBAM and help create and design programming for the organization, and during my second term, I had the honor of serving in the position alongside Kristina Agresta, who made the role infinitely more phenomenal. This year's conference in Philadelphia, PA, was extraordinary but also a little bittersweet. Garnet Media Group was awarded several first-place trophies- including a submission of my creation, Best Social Media Strategy- and earned an honorable mention for College Media Company of the Year. My last conference as a student member of CMBAM will be one I'll never forget. I'd like to thank the CMBAM board members for their mentorship and confidence and my supervisors, Sydney Cranmer and Sarah Scarborough, for their continued support in my role as GMG Marketing Director and CMBAM Student Director.
