Seeing an interesting disconnect in the market right now between SWE’s and manager expectations. The engineers who tend to do best in interviews (and land the top roles) are the ones putting in time outside of work. Side projects, studying, interview prep. They’re usually obsessed with working on modern tools and tech that make their lives and their org’s lives easier. Managers normally value this too, because it shows up in harder work, more modern solutions, and better product outcomes. If they can explain it simply and clearly, even better. Today I spoke with a SWE who interviewed at a top hedge fund. They passed the tech test. In the manager round, they were asked what AI tools they use and how it fits into their workflow. The manager said they don’t really use AI and don’t see it as necessary. The SWE was surprised and didn’t move forward... odd stance for a systematic trading firm. This SWE uses Cursor, ChatGPT and Claude daily and finds them a big efficiency boost. How about you? -> Managers – when you hear candidates talk about using AI tools day to day, do you see it as a red flag or a green flag? -> Engineers – which AI tools are you actually using, and what impact do they have on your work?
