Steven Paul liked thisSteven Paul liked thisI founded HealthLoop in 2009. By the time we were acquired in 2018, we were running over 7 million patient interactions a year across 70+ health systems. So when UpDoc got 510(k) clearance and landed at Cleveland Clinic and UCSF, I paid attention. This was our problem, ten years earlier, without the tools. People assume the hard part was the algorithm. It wasn't. The hard part was that doctors wanted control over every word their patients saw, while patients needed messaging that didn't sound like it came from a compliance department. Those two things fight each other constantly, and we spent years tuning content by hand to keep both sides happy. LLMs can finally make that tension workable, and I've thought a lot about how. So yes, I'm encouraged by what UpDoc is doing. But I keep coming back to Epic. Epic sits on roughly 42% of US acute-care hospitals, and every single customer has to individually approve and configure your access, no matter how much the clinical team loves you. I sat through those cycles. They're brutal. And Epic is now building its own agentic AI natively, which means every CIO's first question becomes "why do I need you?" I've seen that dynamic kill companies with better products and deeper pockets than ours. The companies that survive won't be the ones with the best model. They'll be the ones with a CEO who's actually been through health system procurement, a sales leader who knows a pilot is not a contract, and a board that doesn't flinch when Epic copies the feature set. I'm rooting for UpDoc. Patient outcomes are the whole point. But outcomes won't save you if you can't get through the door.

Steven Paul liked thisSteven Paul liked thisJoin us in congratulating Ryan Mezinger, RPh, CPEL, Senior Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer on being named to Becker's Hospital Review's 2026 list of "Hospital and Health System Chief Pharmacy Officers to Know." Mezinger was among several pharmacy leaders nationwide to be recognized for their work in the healthcare industry to advance patient care, improve medication access and safety and contribute to innovating their healthcare systems. Since joining MetroHealth in 2015, Mezinger has led the significant growth and transformation of the health system's pharmacy services. During his tenure, the department expanded from roughly 50 employees and four pharmacies to a network of 12 patient‑facing pharmacies supported by more than 425 team members, along with a 25,000‑square‑foot centralized pharmacy service center that houses specialty pharmacy, prior authorization operations, home delivery and compliance packaging. Mezinger has also overseen initiatives that have improved patient experience and operational efficiency, including adopting Epic's pharmacy software to integrate prescription tracking into a 360‑degree care model, introducing a "meds to beds" program to ensure patients leave the hospital with essential medications in hand, improving internal pharmacy capture rates to elevate the patient experience, and implementing AI‑driven tools to streamline the prior authorization process – reducing submission times and improving approval rates. Additionally, he supported the development of MetroHealth's upcoming 24/7/365 retail pharmacy with drive‑thru service at the new Outpatient Health Center, further expanding access and convenience for patients. Appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer in March 2024, Mezinger brings nearly two decades of retail pharmacy experience to his role. In 2024, he earned the Timothy D.
