Steven Greene shared thisWhen new information, doubts or surprising facts disrupt an original plan or historical norms, it is time to give pause for thought and deeper contemplation. Please read below.......Steven Greene shared thisI recently read an article about the declining birth rate in the US and Europe. Most of the articles that I read on this topic typically focus on this as a labor or economic issue. While these concerns certainly impact insurance companies, as an industry this is something more fundamental, specifically a long-term reshaping of risk pools, growth assumptions, and product demand. It is obvious but worth stating that fewer births today means fewer drivers, homeowners, workers, and policyholders tomorrow. It also means a smaller base subsidizing aging populations that are living longer and requiring more healthcare, retirement income, and long-term care support. Some of the most significant implications to the insurance industry are structural: • Slower premium growth in traditional personal lines • Greater pressure on life, health, and annuity pricing models • Increased importance of automation and AI as workforce shortages intensify • Expanded demand for products tied to longevity, elder care, and retirement security • More reliance on productivity gains than demographic expansion The industry has historically benefited from population growth as a tailwind; "growth solves many problems." In many developed markets, that era may be ending. The next decade will likely reward insurers that adapt from “growth through scale” to “growth through precision” — better underwriting, smarter distribution, and products designed for older, smaller populations.
