Steve Greim liked thisSteve Greim liked thisWell, the time has finally come. I will be retiring at the end of April, 2022. If it weren't for COVID-19, I might have retired a year earlier. But as long as we weren't going to travel or go, well, anywhere, might as well stay working. The big draw for me to stay at IBM was the opportunity to participate on it's Quantum Computing team, which has been one of the most exciting experiences in my life. In fact, I was planning to ask for one of IBM's part-time transition to retirement programs. But, my division is being spun off to Francisco Partners (this is all public info, so okay to talk about), so that seemed off the table. The Quantum team was amazing in trying to find me a part-time position, but I decided the time was here to try out the next phase of our lives. This will the first time since kindergarten when I haven't been in or building towards a career. Frankly, it's both exciting and scary. I don't know what it will be like. Anyone who has taken this step already, I'm curious how you broached the change. And, maybe, COVID will relent enough for us to have our long-delayed Japan trip this autumn. - Dan

Steve Greim liked thisSteve Greim liked thisI am thrilled to now be an IBM Q Ambassador (in addition to my Watson Health Imaging responsibilities.) This means I will be able to give presentation on quantum computing in general and IBM's Q Experience, which is available to all, and the IBM Q Network. Quantum computing is fundamentally different from classical computing. In particular, it is not governed by same the Turing machine/recursive function mathematics of computability as classical computers. Quantum computers will be able to address some of the problems that are simply out of scope for classical computers due to the calculations or number of states scaling too quickly. Quantum computer circuits (programs) directly work with and manipulate quantum phenomenon of superposition, phase, and entanglement. This is very, very cool stuff.
