I recently posted about Meta's removal of DEI programs and I got an alarming number of (now deleted, thank you very much) angry comments from people who have believed a lot of lies about DEI being discriminatory.
As a career Technical Recruiter I just want to be clear about something:
I have worked at 5 global, well known tech companies. A few of those companies are the biggest names in the game. I worked for these companies during the height of the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity (DEI) "movement".
Not one single time at any of these companies have I ever seen anyone so much as get an initial interview simply because they were a "DEI candidate".
Please hear me. That just isn't reality. It never was. It never has been.
Our aim as Recruiters is to find the best candidates for the role. Some companies have percentage goals of how many diverse candidates they want to see in the pipeline.
But what makes that so freaking challenging to do when you are hiring the same roles over and over, is the fact that there is NO change to the criteria. There is NO lowering of the bar just to meet these numbers. There never would be. That would be bad business.
What I am saying is that NEVER in my career have I seen a female candidate or a candidate of color get an interview who wasn't extremely qualified for the role they were interviewing for.
THAT IS NOT A THING THAT IS HAPPENING. THAT IS A MYTH THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE.
Please think. I am not trying to be condescending by saying that, but please let us pause and think about this critically: Do you truly believe Jeff Bezos would risk his fortune by hiring anyone less than the best? What about him makes you believe this?
He's the second most successful wealth-hoarder in the wealth hoarding game. He didn't get there by making "DEI hires".
They want you mad at things that aren't real.
And perhaps...forgive me but...perhaps some of you want to believe this because there was once a role you really, truly wanted. That you felt was perfect for you. And perhaps you didn't get it? And perhaps it felt easier to believe it was stolen from you, than the far more likely reality that there were a few perfectly qualified candidates like yourself, and they only had one position and had to make a tough call.
Please question authority when they say things that are intentionally divisive. It serves them well that we are as divided as we are. I am working on doing this too.
