Ever wondered how conservation researchers in Puget Sound determine what question to ask next? At Puget Sound Institute we have developed a process that identifies the most pressing questions on researchers’ minds. These knowledge gaps, or “uncertainties,” are generated, assessed, and prioritized by regional topical experts to help focus research activities on answering the largest barriers to management and recovery actions. The Grand Uncertainties Matrix (GUM) has become an essential public resource to guide the US EPA Puget Sound Program’s funding, research, and recovery activities by outlining what we don’t yet know about protecting Puget Sound’s ecosystem. In fact, studies driven by uncertainties have already had impact like clarifying understanding of existing management funding and by spurring the creation of a new Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife #restoration program.
