Sophie Sutherland shared thisI’m thrilled to share that my project Trace won first place in the Ideation category at USF's Innovation Showcase last month! 🎉 Trace is a tool that measures and reports the real environmental footprint of AI usage. Energy, water and carbon are monitored for every call. If you want to learn more, check out my website: https://tracetracker.ai. I built Trace because being able to measure the impact of AI per call is the first step in making an AI a more sustainable technology. As we’ve seen with recent discourse around AI data centres, AI usage increasing is putting massive strain on energy grids, water supplies and causing tension in communities. The showcase was a great experience. Over 50 students submitted ideas, 50 industry professionals reviewed them, and 6 of us made it to the final pitch in the McLaren Conference Center. Competing alongside such strong projects made the win feel extra meaningful. What I'm most proud of is that this started as a spark of an idea and became a real, working product. I was able to leverage Claude Code to help me bring the project to life. AI tools are powerful, so we need to be aware about their impact when we use them and adapt how we use them. I want to thank my advisors for their guidance: Mana Azarm, Larry Ebert, and Marco Tavanti. Thank you for pushing me to take this seriously. I’m also grateful to USF, the Entrepreneurship for All initiative and Johnathan Cromwell for creating a space where ideas like this get taken seriously. Sophie Sutherland shared thisThank you Madeira! Last week I attended the Immersive Global Summit in Madeira, Portugal. It was a pleasure listening to some fantastic talks by Neil Redding, Leigh Davidson, Kevin O'Donovan, Jay Latta, Tupac Martir and Gregg Katano amongst many more. I want to say a huge thank you for everyone who took the time to talk with me about my ambitions in the field. In particular, Vanessa Mullin, Matthias Strodtkoetter, Ingrid Maes, Maxim Jago, Ted Pierpont, Ifigeneia (Ifi) Mavridou, Ryan Gaus, Luca Lupattelli and Helder da Rocha Pereira. Not to mention the fantastic network of inspiring women such as Tarja Stephens and Leslie Shannon. As a new young professional, it’s very inspiring to see how open and welcoming people are in the XR/Web3 community. I’m also grateful for the spontaneous airbnb with Bodine Beentjes, Joel de la Fuente and Sophia Moshasha. Lastly, the presentations given by large and small companies like Lenovo, Magic Leap, Unity, Qualcomm, emteq labs, SenseGlove, to name a few, really shows the amount of time, effort and resources being invested in the XR space. This demonstrates a great outlook for the #future. It's the kind of thing that makes you pause for a second. It’s both exciting and deeply humbling to be included alongside 25 other brilliant founders, selected from a pool of over 3,000 applicants. Being part of this group is a reminder of how many people are building with conviction, resilience, and ambition. A big thank you to FounderSquare for this incredible opportunity and for building a platform that highlights early-stage founders pushing ideas forward. Another great gratitude to Dylan Oriundo and The Builder Series for the nomination and their amazing work 🙏☀️ Coming to the U.S. with no network and seeing the vision resonate and receiving so much warmth, trust, and support along the way, is something I don’t take for granted. It’s something I want to reciprocate at every opportunity and carry forward in everything I do. I'm especially grateful for my team. They don't just show up, they dig in. Into the hardest, messiest, most uncertain parts of building something real. That matters more than I can say. In August we had nothing on paper. Today we're working inside aviation, defense, energy, quantum, and robotics with some of the most sharp, curious people I've ever met. Grateful, motivated, and just getting started.
