“Before we hired Nate, Valvoline was in need of a culture change in safety both in it's quick lube business and it's manufacturing areas. While safety was important there was a much needed, zero incident culture that needed to be developed. Nate was instrumental in institutionalizing that safety culture and taking Valvoline to the next level. Nate is not only technically very competent, he also has the ability to relate to all team members from the manufacturing floor to the board room in order to bring about lasting change. Not only helping them to improve the day to day safety issues, but also to challenge and inspire them toward a vision safety perfection. There are a lot of safety professionals that know their work and have an impact on the day to day, however, there are few that can combine that expertise to improve the day to day but to also drive a lasting and permanent change in safety culture. Each team member stayed for a rotating 2 week period, performing various activites such as site inspections, conducting safety training, and participating in PHAs/PSSRs.

Why We Hold a Safety Role In any organization, safety isn’t a box to check or a binder on a shelf. It’s a leadership function. It’s a commitment to protecting people, preserving operational integrity, and ensuring that every team member goes home in the same condition they arrived—if not better. We hold a safety role because culture doesn’t build itself. Processes don’t enforce themselves. Hazards don’t identify themselves. Someone has to take ownership of the systems, behaviors, and decisions that keep a workplace running without injury, interruption, or regret. A strong safety role exists to: -Champion risk awareness before risk becomes an incident -Translate regulations into real-world practices that teams can actually follow -Build trust by showing employees their wellbeing is non‑negotiable -Protect productivity by preventing downtime, rework, and avoidable losses -Strengthen operational excellence through consistency, discipline, and accountability -Model the behaviors that shape a resilient, high‑performing culture Safety is not about saying “no.” It’s about enabling people to do their best work without unnecessary risk. It’s about designing systems that make the right actions the easy actions. It’s about leadership that sees the whole field—not just the task in front of them. At the end of the day, we hold a safety role because people matter, and because great operations are built on great habits. When safety is strong, everything else—quality, morale, efficiency, and performance—gets stronger with it.

This is a good depiction of what I have started calling "the divide", my limited experience has shown me that well meaning safety focused operational leaders tend the lean towards BBS. While senior safety leaders are more and more often all in on HOP. This leads your friendly site safety manager to try to make both work at the same time in way that still gets results. Anyway, Happy Friday everyone!
