Inferact is a new startup led by the maintainers of the vLLM project, including Simon Mo, Woosuk Kwon, Kaichao You, and Roger Wang. vLLM is the leading open source inference engine and one of the biggest open source projects of any kind and is used in production by companies like Meta, Google, Character.ai, and many others. Inferact supports the vLLM project through dedicated financial and developer resources and will build what they see as the next generation commercial inference engine. For a16z infra, investing in the vLLM community is an explicit bet that the future will bring incredible diversity of AI apps, agents, and workloads running on a variety of hardware platforms. No, I’m not talking about the famous transformer architecture that made its debut in the seminal 2017 “Attention is All You Need” paper and underpins many large language models today. I’m talking about physical transformers. Transformers at the data center layer. The ginormous voltage translators that convert power from the grid into a current usable by data centers. With the largest transformers weighing 200+ tons and standing at ~22,500 cubic feet, they have become the newest hot item to hit the AI industry. This is because compared to their skyrocketing demand, transformers are so few in number due to their highly manual and slow manufacturing process (requires skilled humans to perform precise and custom copper wire winding). And these transformers are critical for the operation of data centers. 𝐍𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 = 𝐧𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 = 𝐧𝐨 𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐆𝐈. Now that the value of voltage transformers is clear, it also becomes easy to understand why Google Cloud purchased Intersect for $4.75 billion dollars in December 2025. Intersect, a developer of renewable energy and data center infrastructure, is one of the largest customers of in-demand power components such as transformers. With an estimated 8-10 gigawatt pipeline in development, the company has already obtained grid connections and permits in strategic data center development locations—exactly what you need if you’re a hyperscaler like Google Cloud who is rolling out AI data centers across the United States. All of this is to say that it’s worth paying attention to what’s happening to data centers at the power level. Because if there is not enough ready-to-use power to fuel data centers, then the rest of the AI stack running on top of this critical infrastructure—including chips, models, and applications—will be bottlenecked. 🔌⚡🔌⚡ Some information about transformers and Intersect was pulled from Ann Davis Vaughan’s reporting with The Information. Bachelor's, Olympian grade skier, straight A student 😳 how can one keep up!? If there is a decent science museum in any town we go to, my family will be making the trek (because many science museums are not in the heart of the city). Therefore I was excited to see the progress on the new Science Centre in Jurong, which the Science Centre Singapore has partnered with JTC Corporation Centre of Excellence in Building & Infrastructure to project manage. Located next to the Chinese Garden MRT station, on the Jurong Lake park connector and designed by Zaha Hadid and Architects 61, this will be several times larger than the current. Looking forward! I'm so proud of Treats Rewards and how it brings value and joy to our community of pet parents and nearly 50,000 associates. While it is hard to close that chapter, it is also energizing to start a new adventure. Pricing brings together so much of what I'm passionate about: analytics, customer data, strategy, and operational excellence. Another meaningful part of this transition is that Loyalty Operations is also moving from Marketing to Merchandising, bringing all enterprise promotions teams together under one organization. There is so much great work to be done, and I appreciate the opportunity to grow. Thank you to all of my colleagues, friends and mentors at PetSmart. I'm grateful to work alongside you (and your pets) as we continue to help everyone experience more joy with pets.
