Until your best people are already gone. At first, it’s “just how things are.” Until burnout, disengagement, and turnover become the norm. 10 Signs Your Culture is Broken: 1. Employees work while sick. ↳ If rest feels like a risk, the culture is already failing. 2. You need permission to take a break. ↳ Trust doesn’t exist if leaders control every minute of your day. 3. It’s normal to message someone during vacation. ↳ If people can’t disconnect, they’ll never truly recharge. 4. Ignoring bullying within the team. ↳ Silence isn’t neutral, it’s enabling toxicity. 5. Emotionally inappropriate feedback. ↳ Feedback should build, not break. 6. Deadlines set for “yesterday.” ↳ Urgency culture burns people out fast. 7. Overloading responsible employees with work. ↳ Rewarding competence with exhaustion is how you lose top talent. 8. Favoritism and cliques divide the team. ↳ A strong culture is built on fairness, not politics. 9. Unhealthy competition among colleagues. ↳ If winning means tearing others down, everyone loses. 10. Disrespecting employees’ personal time. ↳ Work is infinite. Energy isn’t. Here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud: People don’t quit because of “better offers.” They quit because they’re done being undervalued, overworked, and ignored. They quit because they’ve given their best to a company that gives them nothing back. And when top talent walks out the door, they don’t look back. They don’t warn you. They just leave. I came into HR later than many people. While others had years in the field, I had determination, curiosity, and a genuine desire to learn. Someone chose to invest in my potential instead of focusing only on my past experience. That decision changed my career. As I continue growing, pursuing new opportunities, and working toward my SHRM-SCP, I carry that lesson with me: the best leaders don’t just hire experience they recognize potential. Shanti Daniels, MBA liked thisShanti Daniels, MBA liked thisFive interviews. Six weeks. And a plot twist I definitely didn’t see coming. I started interviewing for an HR leadership role in May. Recruiter. Director. Recruiter again. Director again. HRBP. And finally…the VP of HR. At this point, it felt a little like I had finally made it to Oz. 😂 Our conversation lasted an hour and ten minutes. We talked about the company’s history, her career, the culture, and a recent acquisition. She even commented that if I could start immediately, she might reconsider offering me the position right there. I left thinking, Wow. That went really well. Two days later, I got the feedback. Apparently, I had “dominated the interview” and the VP “couldn’t get a word in edgewise.” Wait…what? 😳 Interesting, considering I somehow listened to the company’s history, her career story, the culture, AND details about an acquisition. Apparently, multitasking really is one of my strengths. 🤷♀️ Then came the final plot twist. After five interviews and six weeks, leadership determined they actually needed to hire for a lower-level position. And would I consider it? Here’s the thing. I can handle rejection. I can handle constructive feedback. What I struggle with is a hiring process that takes six weeks and five interviews to determine the level of the position the company actually needs. Candidates’ time has value too. As HR professionals, we talk a lot about candidate experience. Sometimes, the best reminder of its importance comes from sitting on the other side of the interview table.

Leadership is creating clarity when things get messy. Reducing friction when everything feels complicated. Helping people move forward when there are too many moving parts. The best leaders don’t rely on effort. They build systems. Not because they’re lazy. Because effort doesn’t scale. Most people solve problems by adding effort. Great leaders solve problems by removing friction. They simplify decisions. Create routines. Build habits. Use tools. Empower people. That’s what makes hard things look easy. Not talent. Not luck. Design. The best leaders understand something most people miss: If a problem keeps showing up, it’s probably not a people problem. It’s a system problem. The leadership lessons are the same. Whether you’re leading a company or a family.
