Stop coding and start documenting (your future self will thank you). I’ve seen many projects fail not because of bad code, but because of a game of telephone between the boardroom and the IDE. In my experience, the gap between a business idea and a deployed feature is a canyon. Documentation isn't overhead, it’s the real bridge. If you're navigating the alphabet soup of requirements, here is how I view the flow from an Architect’s perspective: 1. The BRD (Business Requirements Document): The "Why" If the BRD isn't clear, you're building a ladder against the wrong wall. I look at the BRD to understand the scale. Are we solving a local problem or an enterprise-wide pain point? Architect’s lens: Does this business model actually require a distributed system, or is a monolith the more cost-effective path? 2. The SRS (Software Requirements Specification): The "What" This is the contract. If it’s not in the SRS, it doesn’t exist. This is where we define the logic. Architect’s lens: I focus on the "non-Functionals" here. Latency, throughput, and security aren't features; they are the foundation. 3. The SDD (Software Design Document): The "How" This is the playground. We map out the data schema (PostgreSQL for me), the API contracts, and the cloud infrastructure. Architect’s lens: The SDD should be detailed enough that a developer could build the system without needing to ask me a single question. 💡 Senior Architect’s Pro-Tip: In massive enterprise environments (like Banking or Telecom), you might also see an SRD (System Requirements Document). While the SRS tells the software what to do, the SRD defines the entire ecosystem, hardware constraints, load balancers, and third-party integrations. For most teams, these merge into the SRS, but in high-stakes infrastructure, that distinction is vital. The Golden Rule: - BRD = The Dream. - SRS = The Blueprint. - SDD = The Construction Plan. This post addresses an important feature of Event-Driven Architecture. The ownership aspect is an often overlooked benefit of an event-driven system. With request-response, whenever something goes wrong, there's ambiguity: is this a failure that the called service should have handled, or something the caller needs to be prepared to handle? Lately I’ve been thinking about how much of software development is just dealing with decisions made in the past. Sometimes your own, sometimes someone else’s. Working with .NET, debugging things, revisiting old code… it makes you realize pretty quickly that small choices don’t stay small for long.
