Why I Became a Technology Advisor After 30+ Years of Surgery, and still practicing full-time ... A colleague recently asked why I spend time advising health tech companies instead of focusing solely on patient care. The answer surprised them: because bad technology kills people. The best health tech emerges from true collaboration between clinicians and engineers. When Google Glass reached out in 2013, they didn't just hand me a device – they asked what surgeons actually needed. That conversation shaped how the technology evolved. Today's healthcare challenges require tomorrow's solutions, but they must be built on yesterday's wisdom – the timeless principles of patient care, clinical judgment, and the sacred trust between doctor and patient. Every technology we introduce into healthcare should pass the "3 AM test": When you're tired, stressed, and making critical decisions, does this technology help or hinder your ability to save lives?
