As many of you know, I stepped away from my commercial aviation ✈️ role a few months back and have since been on a self-imposed sabbatical. During this time, I have done a lot of reading 📕 and reflecting💭 which has caused me to think about a number of adages and sayings that I have lived by, and in some instances to reconsider whether or not they are really true or helpful 🤷‍♀️.   💡 I have since determined that one of my early adages may be at the root of what I will call my “perfectionism neurosis”.    Throughout my youth, I was actively involved in a U.S. leadership and development program for young people called 4-H 🍀. I loved 4-H and am grateful for the many lessons and skills I learned: from confidence, to public speaking, to how to sew a button on a shirt 👕.    The 4-H motto is TO MAKE THE BEST BETTER. On the surface, that’s a great motto, but I think little Susie took it a bit too seriously, and to this day, I have trouble feeling that anything I do is really my best, because it could always be better . . . right?   A few weeks ago, I was invited by my friend Sara Nellermoe, MBA to attend a University of Minnesota - Carlson School of Management alumni event, and one of the faculty-led breakout sessions was entitled Hidden Consequences of High Performers in the Workplace. In this session, Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Campbell explored both the positives and negatives of being and/or working with and/or managing high performers. One of my takeaways from that session was that not everything I do in life needs to be “my best” . . . and sometimes, it can actually be counterproductive. In many instances, “good enough is good enough”. Yes, the data in my report needs to be accurate and should always be my best, but do I need to beat myself up two days later when I realize that the font size or justification in all of the tables was not consistent? Attention to detail is one thing - complete obsession with detail is another.   At the end of the session, Dr. Campbell shared an acronym and visual which is now on my desktop: ELMO, meaning: Enough, Let’s Move On.   This may be an old and tired acronym (and once again, I’m late to the party), but I have found myself recalling it on a daily basis as I move through my tasks at hand (including the self-editing of this post) and thought I would share in case it resonated with and was helpful to anyone else.   Enough . . . Let’s Move On (and with that, I am promising to you and myself that I will not re-read this post an hour from now and obsess over all of the ways that I could have made it better - it's good enough). ~Susan
