The group brings 40 of the brightest scientists and engineers together to identify new areas of development in computer science and information technology and to recommend future possible research directions. The ISAT Study Group was established by DARPA in 1987 to support its technology offices and provide continuing and independent assessment of the state of advanced Information Science technology as it relates to the U.S. Department of Defense. Samarth Kishor liked thisSamarth Kishor liked thisI still can’t believe I’m saying this, but I am so honored and grateful to have graduated from the Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism as valedictorian of my class. People often ask me why I pivoted and decided to pursue journalism; I always say that it was because it makes the world come alive. I honestly didn't think journalism could possibly get any cooler or more magical when I started on this path, but the past couple of years have opened my eyes to a whole new angle: that the people behind the stories are actually equally as amazing. I was beyond lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing people this year—people who pushed and supported me, who showed me new ways of thinking and brought out my best. It was a privilege and a blast to learn and report alongside such a creative group of young journalists, and to take in the genius of so many unfailingly generous professors and mentors. I will savor their countless pearls of wisdom forever. “Special thanks” could never be enough for Michael Shapiro, Kat Chow, Keith Gessen, Marguerite Holloway, Alexis Clark, Payton Guion, and Sally Herships, who gave me my very first assignment and a motto that has guided me since: find what's surprising. As for what's next, I'm so thrilled to be returning to The Atlantic as part of their revived Editorial Fellowship program, which will be based out of DC. I can't wait to get back to my hometown and get started supporting the community of Atlantic journalists doing such incredible work. I'll be working to make cutting edge testing practices more understandable and accessible to everyone... ...in part by writing tons and tons of foundational material on everything from system invariants to set theory to the history of the computing... ...And some more exotic ideas we're gonna skunkworks, too. I'm starting in August. I can't begin to describe how excited I am about this job.

I’ve decided it’s time to move on to my next adventure and take on new challenges. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities to learn, grow, and work on impactful problems during my time there. Most of all, I appreciate the people — talented teammates and mentors who challenged me, supported me, and shaped the way I think about building and delivering software. As one chapter ends, another begins. I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be starting my next role as a Senior Software Engineer at HubSpot later this month, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing in this new chapter.

Samarth Kishor liked thisSamarth Kishor liked thisAfter six incredible years at Amazon, I’ll be turning the page to my next chapter, with my last day on August 22. My time at AWS has been nothing short of a dream — seeing research (https://p-org.github.io/P/) translate into real-world impact is deeply rewarding. I’m especially proud of the role my team played in transforming how AWS builds complex distributed systems with confidence in correctness. Some of this journey is captured in our article: “Systems Correctness Practices at AWS.” https://lnkd.in/dFvd68dP What made it all so meaningful, though, were the people. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside brilliant engineers, researchers, and leaders. Early in my career, Doug Terry shared a lesson that stayed with me: “We’re here to build awesome services, but more importantly, to build strong relationships and leave behind memories.” I hope I’ve lived up to that ideal. Thank you for all the memories and I am sure the relationships will stay beyond the Amazon boundaries. While it’s bittersweet to leave, I’m excited for what comes next: continuing my passion for building reliable systems — now in the Data & AI space. Samarth Kishor liked thisSamarth Kishor liked thisI’m pleased to announce that on August 1st I will start a new chapter of my career: I will join the University of Pennsylvania as a Professor of Computer and Information Science, and I will serve as the inaugural director of the Schlein Center for Cybersecurity. I’m very excited about this opportunity. As GenAI is rapidly transforming the ways we construct and operate computer systems, it is creating substantial new security challenges. To meet these challenges and many others, we need new research and educational offerings fueled by university, industry, and government collaborations. Penn is well placed to deliver, thanks to its strengths in engineering, law, business, international relations, journalism, and other disciplines across campus. I’m looking forward to being part of this important work and learning a lot in the process. Today I’m closing the current chapter: This is my last full-time day as a Senior Principal Applied Scientist at Amazon. Going forward I’ll be a part-time Amazon Scholar. I’ve learned so much during my 3.5 years at AWS, and I’m grateful that as a Scholar the learnings can continue. I want to especially thank Byron Cook and Neha Rungta, who recruited me to Amazon and have been a regular source of inspiration and encouragement. I also want to thank Emina Torlak and Darin McAdams, from whom I learned so much while working on Cedar (https://lnkd.in/ehENXCqE), and Jim Grundy, with whom I’ve worked this last year on how to make GenAI better by using automated reasoning and automated testing techniques. I look forward to continuing to learn from them and the many other fantastic scientists, engineers, and product leaders too numerous to mention, with whom I’ve been fortunate to work these last few years. Samarth Kishor liked thisSamarth Kishor liked thisIn 2015, AWS inaugurated the Automated Reasoning Group, starting with just a few scientists. Today, following a steady stream of successes, more than 150 full-time automated reasoning scientists (along with collaborating engineers and interns) are driving innovations at Amazon. Many of these innovations center on assuring the correctness and security of AWS’s most critical software and services through the use of *formal methods*. Last Tuesday (17-June-2025) I had the opportunity to speak about that remarkable success at the DARPA Resilience Colloquium (https://lnkd.in/epFK8ebD), which showcased the progress made to bring formal methods from the lab to high-impact reality. My talk provides a brief overview of the arc of formal methods work up to and at AWS, in terms of its application targets and the techniques used, and it dives into two examples I was involved with: The AWS IAM Authorizer, and the Cedar authorization language. The talk calls out key features that have made these and other formal methods a success at Amazon, hoping they help show a way that others might follow. https://lnkd.in/esaZF3hk

I pissed off a lot of Senior Software Engineers yesterday. I called English a programming language, and the tech world lost its mind. My comment section was flooded with PhDs and Architects telling me I was wrong. They told me LLMs are not deterministic compilers. They told me English is too ambiguous to build reliable systems. They told me I need to give back my degree. And factually? They are 100% right. AI is a probabilistic guessing engine. It hallucinates. It leaves placeholder API keys in the code. If you don't know how to read the output, you will eventually break your product. But they are missing the bigger picture. I am not talking to Senior Systems Architects. I am talking to the founder who couldn't afford a $150/hr developer last year. Before AI, that founder's idea died on a whiteboard. Today, that founder can use plain English to build a messy, unscalable, but working MVP. They can get their first 10 customers. They can validate the market. Yes, the code will eventually become a chaotic juggernaut. Yes, they will eventually have to hire one of those angry Senior Engineers to rebuild it properly. But the barrier to entry has undeniably collapsed. You don't need to write perfect Python to start a business anymore. You just need to be brave enough to start the conversation. Are you letting the fear of "imperfect code" stop you from building?

we stopped hiring junior engineers last quarter. not because we wanted to. because Claude does 70% of what we used to hand to new grads. Anthropic just published research confirming what I've been feeling in my own hiring pipeline — companies aren't laying off programmers. they're just quietly not backfilling junior roles. 14% decline in job finding rates for 22-25 year olds in AI-exposed jobs. the part that should scare you: programmers have the highest AI exposure of any occupation. 75%. not truckers. not factory workers. us. I use Claude probably 6 hours a day. it writes my boilerplate, catches bugs I'd miss, handles the tedious integration work that used to be "great learning opportunities" for new hires. so what does a junior engineer even do now? honestly I don't know. and I say that as someone who was a junior engineer not that long ago building EvolvFit with zero help. that struggle made me good. I'm not sure you can skip it. the irony of building the thing that makes your own early career path obsolete is not lost on me. #AI #Engineering
