87% less spent fuel from the same reactor. How? A recent reactor-physics analysis of thorium–HALEU fuel concepts for PHWR reactors explored how advanced fuel compositions affect spent fuel generation. One result stands out. High-burnup thorium fuel could reduce spent fuel volume by ~87.5% for the same electricity output compared with standard PHWR natural-uranium fuel. The reason is straightforward: each fuel bundle produces far more energy before discharge. Fewer bundles are required to generate the same electricity, which means far less spent fuel leaving the reactor. This is why advanced fuels matter. They can dramatically improve the efficiency of reactors already operating today. Higher burnup sits at the core of CCTE’s ANEEL fuel concept for PHWR reactors.
