  • A Facebook by any other name...

    VatorNews

This feels like a focal point.

Based on Facebook’s massive announcements from f8, new features coming to everyone’s favorite social network are about to change the way we interact with media online. While the updates are sure to have users freaking out for a few weeks, that’s nothing new.

The real question is this: what will the social media landscape look like when the dust settles?

  • An ode to independence from Facebook

    VatorNews

Happy Independence Day! Continuing an age-old tradition, we patriotic Americans spent the weekend stuffing our faces with hot dogs, staring at firework explosions in the sky and spending a little quality time with family and friends, all to celebrate the day this country declared its independence.

But, over the past week, I’ve been celebrating my own unique brand of independence: independence from Facebook.

  • The Sublime in Moby-Dick

The Department of English of Pomona College

How can one possibly write about the sublime? The sublime in nature is that which overwhelms the mind with such an infinity of awe so as to effectively blur or even blind all the senses, rendering one incapable of understanding the sensations being experienced, let alone the possibility of explaining the experience. Therefore, the sublime is essentially ineffable. One should not even be able to semi-accurately portray the sublime, its definition dictates, because the experience of it transcends…

One should not even be able to semi-accurately portray the sublime, its definition dictates, because the experience of it transcends the mind’s abilities of comprehension. Without comprehension, one cannot know where to begin to linguistically place the experience.

Even if a person manages to mirror the sublime through language, as I would argue Melville does in so many portions of Moby-Dick, we, as literary critics, still run into the same problem as we have before. How can one possibly write about how another has written the sublime?

    Chapters include:

    • Simply Sublime
    • Whale as Subset of Sea as Subset of Sublime
    • Sitting with Ishmael
    • Sitting with Ahab
