so, three months ago, I was laid off from my job, was shocking and completely unexpected, since everything looked good, so I had to go back to the job hunt. Took my linkedin profile, fixed some stuff and began to dig again, day after day, on the countless offers around... oh boy, has been hard! Everyday looks like a groundhog day, wake up, hit the gym, back home, browse the offers, apply to some, wait for any response, rinse and repeat... My experience from the last 15 years is focused on ruby and elixir, mainly, never paid too much attention to "cool" stuff around like react, and wow, how difficult is to learn that kind of stuff... I'm still looking, though, i know there are still some companies willing to hire human beings in this era of "Everything Everywhere All at Once" AI, but it's not easy, there are a lot of experienced people out there, capable of doing any job, using multiple tools and languages.
I think I have skills and experience to offer, that's why I'm posting this, at first I "tried" to "write" something nice, linkedin-style, asked chatgpt and it built the most chatgptesque-generic post ever, was good, but good enough to make some noise for a couple of weeks on my contacts' timelines, so I decided to write this, at risk of appearing on r/linkedinlunatics (yes, I'm following that sub), so at least my contacts in HR positions will see that there is a potential candidate for their projects.
Now, what can I do? At a glance, I'm a backend developer, with knowledge of Elixir, because that's been the language I've been using for the last 5 years, I also worked with Ruby and Ruby and Rails for many years, but, when you stop using a tool for a while, you start to getting rusty, getting behind the new concepts (pattern matching, static types, whhhhhhhat?) but I'm eager to re-learn, because Ruby rocks!. Ok, back to what I can do, so Elixir, with a bunch of Absinthe, scheduled jobs with Oban, custom and complex queries with Ecto, and more stuff related to the Elixir ecosystem on production environments. Have experience with AWS, Heroku, deployment strategies, CI/CD pipelines, and more backend related stuff. I also have experience working in teams, collaborating with frontend developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software.
I have had the chance to work on Agile teams, kinda Agile teams, and WeNeedToGetThisNewCoolFeatureByYesterday teams, and I have learned about coding, mantaining, working with legacy code, async and remote teams, and all the stuff that comes with the job. I like to learn, especially when those new things make realize that there are great tools/languages out there and I want to keep learning, Frontend stuff perhaps? I'm due for that.
So, if you read all of this and you think I could be a good fit for your team, give me a shout, remote or on-site (I'm based in Medellín-Colombia), I'm open to opportunities and I would love to chat about how I can contribute to your projects.
