  • PizzaHut - Speedup incorporation of third party OpenAPI specifications

At PizzaHut, I reduced the time it took to incorporate an OpenAPI specification from a third-party vendor from 5 days to a couple of hours and increased the time to market by a couple of months.

In most cases, the Golang-based backend strategy was an intermediary between the mobile client and third-party vendors. By being in the path, we could better monitor the user experience or add enhancements to the REST API's.

In the original workflow, it took a couple of days to integrate the OpenAPI specification from the vendor into our implementation. This delay not only cost us testing time but by the time changes were incorporated, the vendor would come out with subsequent changes to the API specification.

I researched and developed a strategy for leveraging the Golang OpenAPI SDK to take the vendor OpenAPI specification and auto-generate the code necessary for consumption.

Part of this effort was developing a proof of concept, presenting to upper management the benefits and assurances that the strategy was sound.

Although it is hard to calculate the ultimate savings in time to market, this improvement increased the time to market by a couple of months due to the quicker end-to-end test cycle (a couple of days to hours). One of the additional benefits of a faster turnaround time was that it allowed us to validate the vendors' assertions on the sanity of the APIs they were delivering.
