Rodney Paris, JD reposted thisRodney Paris, JD reposted thisOver the past several weeks, many talented professionals across the wireless industry have been impacted by difficult business decisions at T-Mobile, Verizon, and other organizations. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many incredible leaders, managers, and frontline team members throughout my career. If you’re one of those affected, know that a restructuring or workforce reduction doesn’t define your value. The skills you’ve built- taking care of customers, leading teams, solving problems, and delivering results- are still incredibly valuable. The good news is that while some organizations are downsizing, others are growing. At Consumer Cellular, we’re continuing to expand our retail footprint. We are actively hiring Retail Store Managers, Assistant Store Managers, Wireless Sales Experts, and other hourly retail positions in markets across the country. If you’re looking for an organization that puts customers first, invests in its people, and offers opportunities to grow your career, I’d encourage you to explore our current openings: https://lnkd.in/gA_PSUPs If you or someone you know has recently been impacted and would like to learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly here on LinkedIn. Even if I don’t personally support your market, I’m happy to connect you with the right people and help however I can. Transitions are never easy, but they often lead to incredible new opportunities. I wish everyone navigating this season the very best, and I hope our paths cross soon. #ConsumerCellular #NowHiring #RetailLeadership #RetailJobs #WirelessIndustry #SalesLeadership #RetailManagement #CareerOpportunities #Hiring #Leadership #CustomerExperience #Telecommunications

It also brings a compliance question employers may overlook: who’s entitled to time off for school activities? Eleven states and Washington, D.C., require employers to give parents time off for activities like teacher conferences and back-to-school nights, and these rules vary widely by state. In this blog, Tina Bengs (shareholder, Chicago, Indianapolis), Lisa Burton (office managing shareholder, Boston, Portland (ME)), and Leah Shepherd (writer, Washington, D.C.) explain how employers can reduce risk and support their employees: https://bit.ly/4gsYxAa #employmentlaw #backtoschool #HRcompliance #leavesofabsence

Rodney Paris, JD reposted thisWe're thrilled to share that Consumer Cellular has been named #4 on Forbes' list of Best Brands for Value! This honor is a celebration of our customers, who trust us every day for affordable wireless, and our team, who works hard to make that trust worth it. Big thanks to Forbes for the recognition, we couldn't be prouder!Rodney Paris, JD reposted thisWhat makes a product a good value? Some people would say high quality. Some would say low price. In the end, though, consumers want some degree of combination: quality versus price—in other words, a product that is “worth it.” So which products do consumers say provide the highest quality for the price? Forbes’ second-annual Best Brands for Value list, created in partnership with the consumer-insights company HundredX, explores this through a year-long survey that gathered 14 million consumer ratings of more than 2,000 brands. The top 300 made the list. Take a look: https://lnkd.in/gYc4WA7G Sponsored by Deloitte

Rodney Paris, JD shared thisBig milestone!Rodney Paris, JD shared thisWe've hit a milestone worth celebrating. Consumer Cellular just opened our 100th store, and we couldn't think of a more meaningful place to do it than Salem, Oregon, the very state where our company was started. Our grand opening was a celebration to remember. Mayor-Elect Vanessa Nordyke joined us and spoke to our shared commitment of keeping our seniors connected. A big thank you also goes out to the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce for their incredible support and warm welcome. We also put our money where our heart is and donated $10,000 to Marion Polk Food Share to go towards the Meals on Wheels program that assists the Salem community. As a national partner of Meals on Wheels America, investing in the well-being of seniors in the communities we serve is at the core of who we are. Salem, we are excited to serve you!

Rodney Paris, JD reposted thisRodney Paris, JD reposted thisI stole this idea and now use it with every single employee. It’s the best illustration I’ve seen of teaching someone to be high agency. It says there are 5 levels of work: Level 1: “There is a problem.” Level 2: “There is a problem, and I’ve found some causes.” Level 3: “Here’s the problem, here are some possible causes, and here are some possible solutions.” Level 4: “Here’s the problem, here’s what I think caused it, here are some possible solutions, and here’s the one I think we should pick.” Level 5: “I identified a problem, figured out what caused it, researched how to fix it, and I fixed it. Just wanted to keep you in the loop.” Using this framework, here’s what I say to every new employee… You will live at Level 4 from Day 1 and as we build trust you will rise to Level 5. Being high agency doesn’t just mean tackling problems in this way. It means your entire way of working should be oriented to being a Level 4+ employee. Plz feel free to steal it as well. And ty Steph Smith for the framework!

Rodney Paris, JD liked thisRodney Paris, JD liked thisI'm proud to serve as a co-chair of the We Are Rip City campaign, in collaboration with Sport Oregon and a growing coalition of iconic Oregon businesses of every size and type. More than ever, Portland needs to unite behind the things that bring us joy, make us stand up and cheer, and remind us that we're part of something bigger. The Trail Blazers are an institution, but this is about far more than basketball. It's about the other 80 percent of Moda events that aren't NBA Games. It's about the future of the Eastside, the Albina district, the WNBA, and frankly, the kind of city we want to be. It's about believing in ourselves again, investing in our future, and showing that Portland still knows how to come together around what matters. Let's choose confidence over cynicism. Ambition over apathy. And let's not allow small thinking (and one election year) to define the future. https://lnkd.in/gP_juygBPortland business coalition launches Moda Center campaign, pushing council to sign renovation dealPortland business coalition launches Moda Center campaign, pushing council to sign renovation deal

This approval is an important milestone as we work toward creating a permanent home that will expand opportunities for our students, families, and staff. I extend my sincere appreciation first to the Milwaukie Planning Commissioners for their thoughtful consideration of CWA’s application. I also extend special thanks to Rhys Konrad of Macadam Forbes; Matt Lowe and Keenan Ordon-Bakalian of Jordan Ramis; Brian Mares; Scott Edwards Architecture; Nick Mesler and Melissa Slotemaker of AKS Engineering & Forestry; State Representative April Dobson; the Lake Road Neighborhood District Association; members of the OMARK Business Center; the Oregon Department of Transportation; and the Directors of the Clackamas Charter Alliance and the Oregon Coalition of Community Charter Schools. Their expertise, guidance, advocacy, and support were invaluable throughout this process. I am also deeply grateful to our families, staff, community partners, Bob’s Red Mill, and everyone who supported CWA along the way. Although there are still additional steps ahead, we are excited to have reached this important milestone and look forward to sharing future updates with the CWA community. It’s exciting to see our continued growth and to bring our commitment to outstanding customer service into another great community. It has been great getting to know the team, meeting members of the community, and seeing all of the hard work come together. Thank you to everyone who helped make this opening a success. Rodney Paris, JD liked thisRodney Paris, JD liked thisFirst Portland was on fire, it is not. Now Portland is ranked as one of the worst downtowns in the world, it is not. Three or four years ago when Downtown Portland was all boarded up and the houseless and drug activity was at its peak, I would have agreed with this statement. We had over 400 tents in downtown and hundreds of drug dealers/users taking over city blocks. Downtown Portland at that time was in peril. Over the last 4-years I have watched Downtown Portland breathe life into itself once again. I have watched the boards come down, the businesses reopen, the illegal drug activity reduced to a few pockets, the number of tents now below 40 and people on the streets enjoying our beautiful city. Do we have work to do, absolutely but are we the worst, no. Having traveled 47 of the 50 states, been to the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and Italy I can say few cities have the beauty Portland thrives upon. - I will say in full transparency, I love Europe and the beauty and history of their cities, but Portland has the natural beauty that most cities would love to have. The people of this city have seen the worst and continue to push forward. We have new businesses, new parks, new life and a city filled with people who will not give up on it. We are not at the end of this beautiful city; we are at the rebirth of a city that will prove to be one of the best in the world. In a time when far too many people give up to easily, we must resist the temptation and persist the future.

It's just her AI and their AI going back and forth, working out what the other one meant. e.g., “My boss said this, what do you think that really meant?” Leena Rinne of 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵, calls it 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 – handing the hard parts of a working relationship (feedback, tough conversations, reading the room) to AI instead of building the skill yourself. Rodney Paris, JD liked thisRodney Paris, JD liked thisUnlimited PTO sounds simple. In California, it isn’t. Many startups adopt unlimited PTO because it aligns with a culture of flexibility and can reduce the administrative burden of tracking vacation. But California has unique wage laws that make implementation just as important as the policy itself. A few key compliance facts: • California law does not require employers to offer paid vacation or PTO. • If you offer accrued vacation or PTO, earned vacation is considered wages. Unused accrued vacation generally must be paid out when employment ends. • A properly designed unlimited PTO policy may avoid vacation accrual and payout obligations because employees are not earning a bank of vested vacation time. However, simply calling a policy “unlimited” is not enough. In the 2020 McPherson v. EF Intercultural Foundation decision, the California Court of Appeal found that an employer’s “unlimited” PTO policy was not truly unlimited based on how it operated in practice. The court emphasized that the policy was unwritten, employees were implicitly expected to stay within a traditional amount of vacation, and they were not actually given unlimited flexibility. For startups considering unlimited PTO, your policy should be more than a recruiting perk. It should be thoughtfully designed and consistently administered. That includes: ✔️ A clear written policy ✔️ Consistent approval practices ✔️ A genuine opportunity for employees to take time off ✔️ A culture that encourages employees to actually use the benefit An unlimited PTO policy that functions like a traditional accrued vacation plan may create legal risk. In California, compliance depends on how the policy works in reality—not just what the handbook calls it. If you’re a California employer and you’re not sure whether your PTO or unlimited PTO policy is compliant, send me a DM. I’m happy to review your policy and help identify potential compliance risks before they become costly problems. #cahr #unlimitedpto #startupculture #employeebenefits #humanresources

Unpopular Opinion: HR Can’t Be Strategic From the Sidelines We keep hearing: “HR can do everything remotely.” But here’s what I see from the highest-performing HR leaders across industries: The best HR executives know this: → Strategy is built in real conversations, not scheduled Zooms → Influence happens in the moments between meetings → Culture is felt, not emailed → You can’t sense burnout, conflict, or team dynamics through a screen What top HR leaders actually want: → Hybrid, not hiding → Time in-person with their teams, operators, and leaders → Space to walk the floor, observe, listen, and catch issues early → Real visibility into how work actually gets done The real pattern: → Remote works beautifully for transactional HR → But strategic HR leadership is an on-the-ground function → Culture is shaped through presence → Trust is built in proximity, especially during change, growth, or crisis Here’s the part no one wants to say out loud You cannot lead a complex people system if you’re never physically in the system. Not every day. Not 5 days a week. But consistently, and intentionally. So here’s the question for today’s HR leaders: Where’s the line between flexibility and distance? And is the push for remote work unintentionally weakening HR’s influence? I’d love to hear your take. Has hybrid vs. remote changed the way HR leads in your organization? #UnpopularOpinion #HRLeadership #FutureOfWork #PeopleStrategy

The 2026 Total Rewards Health Check. Six questions every CHRO should ask their team today. I'm seeing a pattern as organizations enter the new year. They're launching into 2026 with C&B strategies that haven't been stress-tested. No market checks. No retention analysis. No benefits audit. Then Q1 hits, and suddenly: High performers resign Budgets feel misaligned Employees complain about pay It doesn't have to be this way. These six questions create early visibility, so decisions in Q1 are intentional, not reactive. Save this for your next leadership discussion. 📌
