⚡ Episode 3.7 – Power Transformer Vector Group Test Continuing our transformer testing series, today we'll discuss the Vector Group Test—one of the most important commissioning tests performed before energizing a power transformer. A transformer may pass IR, winding resistance, TTR, and oil tests, but if its vector group is incorrect, it can cause circulating currents, protection maloperation, and failure during parallel operation. 🎯 Purpose of the Test The Vector Group Test is performed to verify: ✔ Correct HV and LV winding connections ✔ Correct phase displacement between windings ✔ Proper polarity of transformer windings ✔ Compliance with the nameplate vector group (Dyn11, YNd1, YNyn0, etc.) ✔ Suitability for parallel operation 🔧 Test Equipment 440V, 3-Phase AC Supply Digital Voltmeter / Multimeter Test Leads Phase Sequence Meter (optional) 📋 Pre-Test Checks Transformer isolated and de-energized Bushings cleaned properly OLTC kept at Nominal Tap All terminals correctly identified HV Side: R-Y-B-N LV Side: r-y-b-n ⚙ Test Principle A low-voltage 3-phase supply (typically 440V) is applied to the HV winding. Specific HV and LV terminals are then temporarily shorted, and voltages are measured between selected terminals. The measured voltages are compared with standard vector-group relationships to confirm the transformer's internal connections and phase displacement. 📊 Example: YNyn0 Vector Group Apply 440V 3-phase supply to HV side (R-Y-B). Short R-r and measure: Y-y B-b Y-b B-y Expected results: ✔ Y-y = B-b ✔ Y-b = B-y ✔ B-b < B-y ✔ Y-y < Y-b ✔ R-N = (N-n) + (r-n) If these relationships are satisfied, the vector group is confirmed. 📊 Example: YNd1 / ynd1 Vector Group Apply 440V supply to HV winding and perform measurements as per test diagram. Expected relationships: ✔ Y-3y = B-3y ✔ B-3y = B-3b ✔ Y-3b > Y-3y ✔ B-3b < Y-3b If these conditions are met, the vector group is verified. 🌍 Acceptance Criteria As per IEC 60076, IEEE C57, and utility commissioning practices: ✅ Measured voltages must satisfy the vector-group equations. ✅ Phase displacement must match the nameplate. ✅ Results should agree with factory test records. 🚨 Common Issues Detected Wrong internal winding connections Incorrect OLTC wiring Bushing identification errors Post-repair connection mistakes Incorrect vector group labeling 👨‍🔧 Field Experience During commissioning of a 220/132kV transformer, all routine tests were satisfactory. However, the Vector Group Test revealed a mismatch in tertiary winding connections. Investigation confirmed incorrect reconnection after transportation. Do you make the same mistake as I often do? :) How often this happens to me: - The hardware configuration is completed - Code is completed and compiled without errors and warnings - Downloaded to the PLC and started testing And for some reason, the analog inputs begin behaving crazily: showing open circuit, or value jumps from almost zero to almost max with minimum change on the input After countless mistakes like this, I know where to look immediately. But it wasn’t always that clear for me. Go to hardware configuration, open your Analog Input module properties and check what type of input is configured: voltage/current and the range. Most probably it is wrong :). Sounds stupidly simple? Yes. But how many times does it get forgotten! Planning a new project?
