Founders are focused on finding product-market fit, acquiring customers, and getting transactions flowing. The priority is speed. But as platforms grow, payment requirements become more complex: • Fee allocation across multiple parties becomes a manual workaround • Reconciliation breaks down as transaction volume grows • Customers need settlement behavior the processor can't configure • Onboarding new merchant types requires a different risk framework That's when teams realize they're no longer solving for today's needs. They're solving for decisions made 18 months ago. Most re-platforming projects trace back to growth, not bad decisions. The stack that got you to launch was the right call. The question is whether it can carry you to scale. Day one and day 500 are different companies. The infrastructure should know the difference. Richard Renner liked thisRichard Renner liked this48 teams, 16 cities. 150k miles traveled. This is the 2026 World Cup. Each team gets a 'base' city and travels to compete in three matches. This is the type of logistical problem that gets the blood pumping. I decided it was worth checking how much improvement could be made on the base city locations to minimize how much total travel is required. This really only takes a few steps - identify each stadium & base camp locations to collect latitude and longitudes, connect to the google maps API to get distances, and formulate a straightforward math problem (Someone please recommend a new hobby). Too late to spare some teams the long hauls this time around - cough cough, Canada, with a trip that rivals Curaçao's for total mileage. But, I'm happy to report there is a 12% mileage reduction opportunity for the 2030 World Cup. Job well done by the USA & Mexico for securing premier base camp locations. Curaçao, you have the worst draw, but time to shock the world.

In January of 2016, I began working on a cross study of different waste management systems for rural communities in Guatemala with a team of Ohio State University Humanitarian Engineering scholars. Our team was working with the non-profit Mayan Families, and in May of 2016, we were able to travel there to gather more data on our projects and also present to the non-profit our findings and conclusions.

I thought MSU classes were useless in the real world... This semester, I led a team through Imagine Software to build a database-agnostic client-tracking platform for Waggoner Financials using Go and GraphQL. We just hit our beta milestone and it changed how I think about everything from my classes to my career. Here's what building real software for a real client actually teaches you: 1. Class teaches you to think, not just to code CSE 380 (Information Management and the Cloud ) taught me to evaluate tradeoffs. CSE 335 (Object-oriented Software Design ) taught me interfaces and abstractions. I rolled my eyes at the time. Then I found myself choosing GraphQL over REST because our data needs varied too much for rigid endpoints and building a database-agnostic backend using the exact interface patterns I learned in class. The theory exists for a reason. 2. Real leadership is learned, not assumed I came in thinking leading a team meant having the best technical vision. It doesn't. Early on, I struggled to communicate clearly and couldn't tell if my team was keeping up. What actually worked was slowing down, investing in my teammates as people, and building trust over time. Now we move fast because we trust each other. That's not something any class taught me. 3. The fastest way to grow is to get uncomfortable fast I had never touched Go before this project. I used AI to get up to speed on syntax and language features quickly, then transitioned to writing code myself. I joined a club that put me in charge of a real client before I felt ready. Both forced me to adapt. Both accelerated me more than anything else this semester. Get involved. Ship real things. Let the classroom catch up to you.
