Richard (Rick) Fant shared thisI’ve been involved in smartphones for about 20 years and while there has been evolution, no big revolutions after interface paradign from iPhone in 2008. However, I’m starting to see the glimmer of a major change when the device moves to glasses or other wearable that includes AR and an interface to more voice and biometric gestures (tap your fingers together). Working in location accuracy at #swiftnavigation I can predict that outdoor and indoor position at the centimeter level is not only going to be required for AR but for most of the use cases in how you control your new world. We’re both happy and sad to say that after a 40+ year career in community development and global health, including nearly ten wonderful years at VillageReach, Ruth will be retiring at the end of 2022. VillageReach’s story began in Mozambique more than twenty years ago, and as VillageReach’s Mozambique Country Director, Ruth reaffirmed our commitment to the country and deepened our work there, leading the implementation of several high-impact supply chain solutions. She leaves us as Vice President, Global Programs, where her impact as a determined collaborator, innovator and strategic thinker will live on. Now she will have more time to spend with her grandkids, her family, and on her farm in eSwatini (likely perfecting her wine business). Her departure truly marks the end of an era for VillageReach, and we now look ahead to finding the right person to build on Ruth’s legacy! Richard (Rick) Fant liked thisRichard (Rick) Fant liked thisAfter nine years, I’m stepping away from my full-time role at VillageReach—and it’s been quite an adventure. When I joined in April 2017, after more than 25 years in private sector consulting, I expected to stay no more than five years. The people and the mission had other plans. Mentoring talented professionals across Africa and the United States has been deeply rewarding. Together with governments and partners, we’ve worked to strengthen public health systems by integrating private sector capabilities—from transportation and pharmaceutical distribution to digital solutions and education. I’m especially proud of the team’s ability to collaborate with Ministries of Health to build meaningful partnerships with local private sector actors. Their skill, energy, and commitment give me confidence that our vision—stronger primary healthcare systems where governments fully leverage all available resources, including the private sector—can become a reality across Africa. Beyond private sector engagement, I’m grateful to have contributed to VillageReach’s efforts to help governments institutionalize innovation for lasting impact. Scaling and embedding innovation in public health systems remains a critical challenge in many countries. Looking ahead, I plan to focus more on art education and provenance research as I complete my Certificate of Advanced Studies in Provenance Research at the Université de Neuchâtel. You will see a lot more art-related content on my LinkedIn. If circumstances allow, I will continue supporting VillageReach as a part-time advisor. While the setting feels familiar, my context this year is profoundly different. I am honored to be headed to Oxford for the first time as CEO of Skoll Awardee, Health Care Without Harm. For 30 years, Gary Cohen and our incredible team have mobilized the healthcare sector as a force for environmental action, and I’m proud to help carry that mission forward. Stepping into this role, my perspective is shaped by two urgent realities: witnessing how the climate crisis is rapidly destabilizing human health, and seeing health leaders rise to the challenge, transforming how care is delivered to meet the needs of a changing world. Health professionals are on the front lines every day. They see how climate change erodes the foundations of health—from clean air and water, to food security and housing. But they aren't just bystanders. At Health Care Without Harm, we are proving that by changing how health systems operate, we protect the planet and the people simultaneously. And the return on investment is staggering. According to the World Resources Institute, the average ROI for adaptation initiatives in the health sector is over 78% - due to reduced disease burden, stronger health infrastructure, economic productivity gains, and lower disaster-response costs. I'll be joined in Oxford this year with HCWH’s Executive Directors, Mark Wilson (Europe) and Norly Grace Mercado(Southeast Asia), along with Chief Comms Officer Jo Harrison, Chief Development Officer Erin Ricci, PhD Global Chief Program Officer Mariano DeDonatis, and HCWH Europe's Director of Partnerships & Fundraising, Lyndsay Stecher. We are also honored to have our strategic partner, Bobby Peek, Executive Director of groundWork, join us. We are going to talk about making an impact on climate and toxins, and also strategize with other leaders on how to ensure our efforts can endure – how we can orchestrate the financial and non-financial capital needed for lasting, system-level change. And the economic argument doesn't hold up - fossil fuel–driven air pollution already costs the United States an estimated $820 billion annually in health care costs and premature deaths. This isn't politics. It's our health. Health Care Without HarmRichard (Rick) Fant liked thisThe decision to repeal the Endangerment Finding — the scientific determination that greenhouse gases endanger public health — is profoundly dangerous for families across America. Weakening the legal foundation to regulate climate pollution means dirtier air, more deadly heat, and worsening health outcomes. We are already living with the consequences: record-breaking wildfires, catastrophic floods, and increasingly destructive hurricane seasons. This is being framed as a cost-saving measure. It is not. Fossil fuel–driven air pollution already costs the United States an estimated $820 billion annually in health care costs and premature deaths — roughly $2,500 per person each year — and contributes to more than 100,000 premature deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular disease alone. Ignoring the science does not eliminate these costs. It shifts them onto communities, hospitals, and families. This repeal follows a broader rollback of climate and environmental protections, undermining decades of science-based public health policy. The risks will fall hardest on communities already overburdened by pollution. As Emily Bancroft, CEO of Health Care Without Harm, said: “This decision abandons the government’s responsibility to protect people from pollution that is harming their health right now. From wildfire smoke to record-breaking heat, we are seeing the health impacts of climate change in our hospitals, communities, and homes every day. Weakening the Endangerment Finding increases risk, drives up health care costs, and ignores the science. Health systems cannot shoulder the burden of escalating climate disasters alone — we need strong, science-based protections that put health first.” Health Care Without Harm works globally with health systems to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and protect communities from climate-related harm. Climate change is a public health emergency — and strong climate policy is foundational to protecting health.

Gemini is better and quicker at enough things that I start there. Apparently, OpenAI has noted my declining usage. Why this email would be attractive to a power user, I have no clue. They clearly need serious marketing help as well as improvements to the underlying system.

The next era of connectivity will not be defined by bigger pipes alone. The Edge is not what it used to be.
