We've added a lot of new functionality and spent a ton of time refining the experience based on feedback from surfers here in Northern California. A big thank you to Dean LaTourrette, Bryan McClain, and Garrett Schmid for all of their contributions and for being a great team. Dean has kept us focused on forecast accuracy and helped shape our go-to-market efforts and partnerships, Bryan has been instrumental in product strategy and user experience, and Garrett has led the forecasting and data science work behind the platform. Still a lot to build, but we're excited about where things are headed.

Quincy Carroll shared thisToday I'm sharing a tool called Dropzone that I built to cut the time it takes to job search effectively from hours to minutes. 👇 Link to try it is in the comments I started building Dropzone while working on my startup Onda Sports and looking for contract work to generate some side income. I needed a way to reduce the amount of time it was taking me to find opportunities. I was spending whole days researching companies, finding decision makers, tracking down contact info, and crafting outreach emails — time that was taking me away from building the company. So I built a tool for myself to speed the process up. I found that I could get done in 30 minutes what previously took 3 hours. At that point it seemed like something others might find useful too, so I re-architected it so other job seekers could use it. The traditional job application process is broken. You spend hours submitting resumes that disappear into a black hole. The goal of Dropzone is simple: skip the application process and start a conversation directly with a hiring manager. Then I started vibe coding with Claude Code and realized I'd spent most of my career specifying products, not building them. Lazar Jovanovic's talk on Lenny's Podcast nails what's happening: product, engineering, and design are converging into a single discipline. My own experience building a live streaming video service for my startup Onda confirmed this in ways I didn't expect — I was making Kotlin app changes, writing Python backend services, configuring GCP infrastructure, and debugging live production issues. All as the "product person." The role of product is headed for massive transformation. I'm super excited to be getting closer to the actual creative process of building rather than specifying things in PRDs. Any other product leaders out there making a similar shift?

Quincy Carroll reposted thisQuincy Carroll reposted thisIn 2000, the Big 3 surf brands made $2.8B. Since then, local surf shops have died and the culture’s been gutted. Most big names are now owned by one corp in NYC, the same place that runs Forever 21. Bad for surf. Wide open for the next great brand. The story: 1/ Back then, the “Big 3”, Quiksilver, Billabong, Rip Curl, were the culture. Today you could argue that only Rip Curl remains somewhat interesting. They were Founder-led, had Athletes on payroll, films that lost money but built a movement + culture. 2/ Then came private equity: - "Selling out" - Mall stores > core shops. - Safe graphics > risky art. By 2015, Quiksilver was bankrupt, Billabong was close. 3/ The “fix” was consolidation. Quiksilver, Billabong, RVCA, Volcom, Roxy, DC Shoes, Element, Von Zipper, all rolled into Boardriders. And in 2023, Authentic Brands Group bought Boardriders for ~$1.25B. 4/ ABG isn’t a surf company. It’s a licensing giant that also owns Forever 21, Sports Illustrated, and Reebok. They don’t run brands. They license them to operators who optimise for margins, not for culture. 5/ Local surf shops were the heartbeat of the culture. Then the big brands went D2C, opening their own Quik/Billa stores in prime spots. They stopped supplying the shops and started competing with them, until most were gone. 6/ The fallout: - Athlete budgets cut - No more big-budget surf films - Core shop exclusives gone - Hoodies designed for Costco, not Cloudbreak. 7/ The opportunity: Every time an industry goes corporate, the lineup clears for founder-led upstarts. Brands that actually live the life, fund the trips, and speak the language. Plus the "YouTube" opportunity, which is going to create new founder-led brands / serendipity for upcoming creators / surfers / culture-builders. Examples: - Sterling Spencer - Florence brothers - Koa Rothman - Jamie O'brien - Etc! 8/ Patagonia proved it can scale without selling out. Rip Curl is still founder-spirit-led under KMD Brands. Lots of pockets to find leverage in for new entrants. There's leverage to be found through new distribution channels, pent-up demand for culture-rich projects, etc. That's it! Still feeling the momentum from Friday’s Onda Sports Inc. party at Steamer Lane 🌊 We handed out over 100 hot dogs, met so many friendly faces, and saw 100+ new downloads just from people passing by. Not gonna lie — the popcorn was my favorite snack of the day 🍿 The waves didn’t show up, but Onda brought a wave. What started off foggy turned into a sunny, stoked-out afternoon full of good energy and even better community vibes ☀️ We even got a visit from Faith the surfing dog 🐶🏄♀️ on her way to the World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica CA! And the raffle? A little grom walked away with a full setup — board, wetsuit, and fins. Watching his excitement was unforgettable — feels good knowing Onda might’ve just launched someone’s surf journey. What energizes me most about AI is applying it to amplify human creativity, connection, and judgment. Not replace them. I've been working on SuperGifter.ai to experiment and go deeper. This is a hands-on learning lab, a way to develop judgment about where AI most powerfully reshapes commerce, marketplaces, and meaningful human experience. I care deeply about gifting: thoughtful expressions, large or small, that make people feel seen and strengthen relationships. I wanted to push on what it would take for AI integration to earn the word "magical." This is v1, but that's the goal. With gifting, it comes down to relationship insight. And history. It's important to me that SuperGifter.ai feel like an insightful, supportive partner. Not about outsourcing judgment to AI. About prompting and amplifying human creativity and reach. Two core ingredients: - An iterative Discovery experience that feels energizing, personal, and insightful - A memory layer that compounds context over time. The more SuperGifter.ai understands you and the people you care about, the more personal the experience becomes. My target user is someone who is already a thoughtful gifter, with many recipients and occasions to manage. So there's also an early productivity layer to organize it all while taking advantage of richer context over time. Much of my iteration has been on integrating memory and tuning the prompts behind the conversational flows: supportive tone, shifts from expansive to focused, reading intent, incorporating feedback elegantly. Getting it to feel genuinely insightful is hard. It's also been fun. I've also been: - Productizing prompt versioning and AI integration, so I can shift easily between models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google - Building basic scoring and evals, to help with learning - Tracking token usage and cost, to understand tradeoffs across models Right now, I'm focused on Inspiration and Discovery at the "thoughtful gift idea" level. Going deeper to come. I'm learning quickly and loving it. Feedback is a gift! In a partnership led by the City of Gold Coast with Griffith and Surfline Coastal Intelligence (SCI), Surfline’s Smart Cams capture 24/7, high-resolution video across many of the Gold Coast’s surf best breaks, including Snapper, Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, Kirra, Currumbin, and Burleigh Heads, tracking every pixel in each frame. Griffith's Dr Tom Murray is analysing this data to better understand the surf usage and quality of surf at point breaks within the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve under a variety of conditions, and date-time indicators such as time of day, week, season, year and so on. “From this we can use the information to understand and better manage these valuable socio-environmental assets, according to the Gold Coast Surf Management Plan which was certified by the Council in 2015. This will be an incredibly powerful dataset that we can utilise to understand the social value of these breaks, inform coastal asset and infrastructure management, and safety management. “This study will also provide crucial data for managing and promoting the sustainable use of Gold Coast surf breaks, including investigations for alleviating crowding pressures and other opportunities to improve surf amenity across the broader city." On the one hand... 📈 User-led growth drives 70% of accts 🤝 130k virtual Config conference attendees 💻 2/3 of MAUs are not designers 🎇 Powerful & resonant brand On the other hand... 💰 Organization & Enterprise = 70% of rev 💰 Over 1,000 customers spend $100k+ 📣 30% of rev spent on sales & marketing As much as I believe there are defensible reasons to say "yes", Figma is probably not a consumer company. While most product / user-led growth companies move upmarket to enterprise, Figma started from a place of building for product designers -- that's the core and power user even though 2/3 of MAUs are non-designers. As the consumer pull for professional and personal productivity tools strengthens, no doubt Figma (and others) will continue to resemble consumer companies in many ways.
