It's 4am, but I worked out something that quite literally blew my mind about working in the tech industry, and perhaps about business in general... Maybe this might be interesting, or maybe not, but here's what I worked out: 👉 Most development agencies make more money on scope change fees + retainer fees than selling the initial dev work itself (I was idiotic and thought it was the other way around) 👉 If you're an Agency startup (or arguably, even a freelancer), you need at least 6-12 months of capital to soak up all of the scoping failures & projects that lose you money 👉 You need to survive just long enough to get to sustainable monthly revenue from retainers or repeat dev work from the same clients, but this takes 12-18 months at least Most of you will know that I went from 10-years in coding Software Engineer -> Freelancer -> Dev agency, and failed horribly - not because I'm bad at what I do, but because it's very hard to be profitable .. and then add all of the business development, sales & marketing skills that you need on top of that while somehow still trying to feed yourself with something other than 2-minute noodles. But what ACTUALLY works (as I've discovered) is productised consulting: ✅ Fixed scope & pricing, with clear boundaries around what you actually need to deliver while still getting MASSIVE outcomes for the client ✅ Still scalable, and often delivers immense client value in the form of PREVENTING tech mistakes or providing a clear path forward ✅ You can charge premium rates because you're the expert in your chosen niche by selling VALUE vs. your time So my message to everyone actually is that JUST BECAUSE you're good at something, doesn't mean that you can (only) build a business out of that. You can instead leverage your existing skills and expertise to create a different kind of value for people. Did you know? 💡 Steve Jobs was actually really talented at typography and calligraphy, but if he built a business around that - Apple would never have existed, and history would have been drastically different. Instead, he leveraged his existing calligraphy & typography to build beautiful products - and that's how we got the Macintosh, iPad and iPhone. Same skills & insights, different application. You're not bad at what you do. You just need to be more creative about how you use it 😉
