Patrick Maginn posted thisIt has been 8 months since I was laid off at GoDaddy. It has been 5 months since I became the Director of Customer Support at Convesio. At first I was bummed to be leaving GD after 10 years, but also had a sense of relief because last few years there I was running a team that was not doing customer support. Turns out, I freakin' love customer support and I missed it badly! In the last 5 months at Convesio I have been building new processes and implementing systems that compliment our phenomenal support team. The work is incredibly fulfilling and it just feels good to be using my expertise to positively impact the success of our customers. My secret weapon in all of this? Theft. I've taken all the best parts from my time in the support teams at DreamHost, Media Temple, and GoDaddy and have been integrating them deeply into the bones of our approach to helping customers at Convesio. What this has taught me, more than anything, is that experience is so much more valuable that you realize. Climbing a corporate ladder can be intoxicating, but doing work you love is a high than can't be beat.

Patrick Maginn liked thisA spreadsheet can tell you a laptop exists. It cannot tell you who's holding it, whether it's overdue, or when the license attached to it renews. That gap is the whole job. Most IT and ops teams treat asset management as an inventory exercise. Catalogue the hardware, fill the rows, call it done. The list is accurate the day you build it and quietly wrong by the end of the week. The actual question is never "what do we own." It's "who is accountable for it right now." A live record answers that. Every laptop, license, and accessory tied to a name, with check-out history you can trace, overdue items surfaced before they become a problem, and renewals flagged before they lapse. Inventory is a snapshot. Accountability is a system. That's the line Pulse is built on: onyx-labs.io/pulse #ITAssetManagement #ITOps #SaaS #ITAM #LicenseManagement

Patrick Maginn liked thisPatrick Maginn liked thisA lot of really incredible folks were let go from GitLab today. I don't really have the words to describe how strange it is today, nor do I have the energy to really get into it but to say I am sad and disappointed is putting it mildly. If we've worked together, let me know if I can help with any recommendation. If you're hiring, I can recommend some really killer folks across a ton of disciplines.

Patrick Maginn liked thisPatrick Maginn liked thisCloudflare announced EmDash last week. TypeScript CMS, serverless, sandboxed plugins, Astro under the hood. They're calling it "the spiritual successor to WordPress." My LinkedIn feed seems to be losing its collective mind about it. Look, some of the ideas are genuinely interesting. The plugin security model is smart. Declaring capabilities in a manifest instead of giving every plugin full database access is a real improvement over how WordPress handles things. I'll give them that. But I've seen this before. In February 2023, Cloudflare announced Wildebeest. An open source, Mastodon compatible server built entirely on their stack. Big blog post. Plenty of excitement. "We will keep improving it with more features and supporting it over time." Their words. The repo is archived now. There's a banner at the top of the README that says the project is no longer actively maintained or supported. The open issues were never closed. The last real commit was in 2023. Nobody at Cloudflare even bothered to turn the lights off. They just stopped showing up. I'm not saying EmDash will end up the same way. But I am saying Cloudflare has a pattern. Big launch. Big promises. Quiet archive. And the people hyping EmDash right now either don't know about Wildebeest (to be fair, Mastodon is pretty niche compared to ~42% of the web) or are choosing not to bring it up. WordPress has problems. Real ones. I spend my days fixing them. But it's also been here for almost 23 years, and the ecosystem around it isn't going anywhere. So before you start seriously migrating anything, maybe give it six months and see if EmDash is still getting commits. https://lnkd.in/gVUMcywBGitHub - cloudflare/wildebeest: Wildebeest is an ActivityPub and Mastodon-compatible serverGitHub - cloudflare/wildebeest: Wildebeest is an ActivityPub and Mastodon-compatible server

Patrick Maginn reacted on thisPatrick Maginn reacted on thisI am excited to share that I have been promoted to Senior Technical Project Manager within our Global Production Engineering organization. This milestone marks nearly 17 years of growth in my experience, skills, and knowledge at GoDaddy. I recognize that I haven't posted about this sooner, as accepting compliments and positive feedback has always been a challenge for me. Battling anxiety and depression can sometimes lead to feelings of unworthiness, especially when it comes to achievements like a promotion. But, I figured it was time to let the LinkedIn world know. I want to express my gratitude to all my leaders and mentors who have supported my journey and helped me seize these wonderful opportunities. A special thank you to Noah Madieros for this chance and the ongoing support.

Patrick Maginn liked thisPatrick Maginn liked thisDuring "getting to know you" calls, potential clients ask what it's like to work with me. Usually the ones who've had shaky experiences with other folks they've brought in to work on their site. They want to know the process. How code gets written. How it gets shipped. What happens when something breaks. So I wrote it all down. Version control. Automated testing. Dependency management. Rollback planning. Documentation. The works. If you're thinking about bringing me onto a project, this should give you a pretty clear picture of what that looks like day to day. https://lnkd.in/ga5nJnWEHow I Work: Process, Deployments, and Documentation | Little RoomHow I Work: Process, Deployments, and Documentation | Little Room

HOT TAKE "Scrapped our entire push notification setup. User engagement soared." Are push notifications the friend or foe of user engagement? It's a fine line between being helpful and downright annoying. As developers, we walk this tightrope every day. I recall a time when we were drowning our users in notifications. Every new feature, every minor update — a notification. The result? User annoyance, app deletions, and a drop in engagement. Overkill was our enemy. So, I decided to take a step back. What if we could curate notifications like a Spotify playlist? Targeted, timely, and relevant. We started leveraging machine learning algorithms to understand user behavior better. By analyzing user interactions, we fine-tuned our notification strategy. Users who only opened our app in the evening received updates around that time. We cut non-essential alerts, focusing only on user-initiated triggers. The difference was palpable. And here's something that changed the game: implementing vibe coding. This approach allowed us to prototype new strategies swiftly, A/B testing them with real users to identify what resonates. The impact was clear — improved open rates without the backlash of constant pings. But here's where I flip the question to you: How do you balance between keeping users informed and overwhelming them with notifications? What strategies have you found effective, and where do you think the industry is heading? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! #MobileDev #AppDevelopment #iOS #Android
