Patricia Petersen liked thisLast month, we celebrated my non-profit’s 14th annual scholarship gala. We were fortunate to award scholarships to 7 deserving students and to recognize an outstanding community leader. Since 2009, I have had the pleasure of serving as President and co-founder of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a 501c3 based in Mississippi. From the beginning, our work has been centered on youth mentorship, community outreach, and providing access to higher education for graduating high school students. Since 2010, we’ve awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships and community outreach support to 75+ students and local leaders. We were proud to continue that work by supporting another group of worthy scholarship recipients last month. But this year’s event was different… This was our first event since the passing of my brother and co-founder, Shun Carmichael. In his honor, we established the Shun Carmichael Memorial Scholarship Award. It felt especially meaningful that the inaugural recipient was his daughter, now a freshman at The University of Southern Mississippi. His two sons, both juniors at Middle Tennessee State University, are also continuing his legacy. Thank you to everyone who has supported this mission over the years and donated to the cause, big or small.

You don’t need to be labeled a “cyber professional” to step into RMF or compliance work. Truth is, if you’ve ever worked in operations, HR, customer support, finance, or legal, you’ve already been doing parts of this job. You just weren’t calling it “control implementation” or “risk mitigation.” Think about it... Built an onboarding checklist? That’s access control and process integrity Verified invoices? You were doing segregation of duties and financial controls Handled customer complaints or internal audits? That’s risk identification and incident response That’s RMF. That’s governance. That’s compliance. Here’s how to start shifting your mindset: Write down 5 repetitive tasks you owned in your last role For each one, ask: What risk did this reduce? What outcome did it protect? There’s your RMF foundation. Now all that’s left is learning the language of NIST 800-53 and how to apply it. Don’t disqualify yourself just because your title didn’t say “cyber.” If you’ve solved problems, managed processes, or reduced risk, you’re already in the game. #RMF #CybersecurityCareers #TransferableSkills

I got the chance to explore something I'd been curious about for awhile. PCI DSS compliance. When you're focused on your work day-to-day, for me it's NIST RMF, it's hard to find time to get into other areas related to your field. There are so many frameworks for governance and security, it's difficult to find time to explore those that don't directly impact my work. Sometimes you just have to wait for an opportunity to present itself. A friend presented me with the opportunity to help evaluate the PCI DSS compliance of a system against its existing NIST Rev 4 controls. Some think extra work is extra work, but I was genuinely eager for the opportunity! When you know nothing about a subject, it's initially intimidating. We're scared of things we don't know or don't understand. This exercise was very rewarding, helping me break the nerves and break the ice, so to speak, with PCI DSS. The biggest win is breaking down that intimidation factor and being scared of things I don't know. It's not always easy exploring new areas, but that's how you grow. Fortunately, I had an opportunity present itself and let me learn something new. A mentor recently asked me about my familiarity with another framework, COBIT. I explained my limited knowledge, but this recent experience has made me eager to learn more about it, rather than shy away from it. In the world of compliance, organizations usually follow a number of frameworks, not just one. Understanding the different tools of the trade and how they relate to one another ultimately builds a more valuable and effective knowledge base. I talk security, but it's not about security. It's about your bigger picture. Search for opportunities to challenge yourself. Seek to develop your understanding of the systems around you. Always push yourself to learn new things! #GRC #Compliance #PCIDSS #NIST #ProfessionalDevelopment
