If you have checked out the What's New notes for Map Viewer and ArcGIS Online you might have seen Time Series being mentioned. For years, time-enabled layers have made it possible to animate data that changes over time. We added support for setting time based layer visibility which is great for feature layers and sketch layers but is not a per feature time enablement. Many real-world datasets also don't store time as individual features. Instead, they store each point in time as a separate field. Think static features that do not move but report a change in values like in the example I will show using daily gas prices but it also works for other examples like weekly drought conditions, monthly population estimates, or annual census statistics. Traditionally these datasets required preprocessing or required you to author Arcade expressions before they could be used to do visual analysis with time. With the June 2026 release of ArcGIS Online, Map Viewer introduces Time Series. You can find Time Series under the layer properties panel for your feature layers. Time Series lets you define a sequence of date-based fields as a temporal dataset directly within Map Viewer. As the timeline advances, Map Viewer automatically switches between those fields to visualize change over time—without duplicating your geometry or restructuring your data. Once configured, the data behaves like any other temporal layer. Once configured you can apply a Time Series to your layers styling, popups and labels. As you play the time slider through time you will style, labels and popups update to reflect the time stop the time slider position the handle is at. The big benefit with using time series is that is allows you to have a layer that does not require thousands of duplicate features and instead you get to have a single feature with just multiple columns. The result is a much simpler data model that's easier to maintain while still providing smooth, interactive animations. Time Series makes it significantly easier to explore trends, identify patterns, and communicate how data changes over time—all directly within Map Viewer. In the screenshots below you will see 1. The original table showing multiple rows of states with reported gas prices per day over the last year and a half. (using this original table would be roughly 550 features per state for the reported gas prices per day per state) 2. The data pipeline I used to create the hosted feature that used a pivot table and a join to a simple states layer to create the final hosted feature layer with a single feature per state + 550 fields for the per day gas reporting, 3. Authoring a time series: Simply select the fields you want to use with your time series, set the start date and the interval and we do the rest behind the scenes. 4. Find the new times series in the Field picker in Styling, Labels, Popups and use them just like you would with other fields and expressions. 5. Hit play on time slider 😅

Claude Fable 5 is back — so I gave my computer graphics explorer a second round. In June I let it build the whole thing alone: 66 terms in plain English, a small playground for each. This time it went much deeper on the ArcGIS side. The highlight: it wrote its own shaders directly into the ArcGIS 3D engine. Path tracing, ray tracing, motion blur, real water reflections — running live over real cities, all keyless. 👇 It even reversed nine effects it had first called "impossible with this SDK." I only had to ask it to re-check its own answer. The idea and the spec were mine. I noticed a pattern I can't stop thinking about. The organizations that thrive in the AI era won't simply adopt better technology. They'll intentionally design the strategic infrastructure that enables trust, learning, and coordinated action to emerge. The more I think about it, the more I realize I've been seeing the same design principle for years. At concerts, where thousands of fans become a living, breathing, connected tribal community for a few hours, then continue to deepen the trust and sense of belonging with each other and the band long after the show. In Castells (human towers), where something extraordinary only becomes possible because trust, coordination, and shared purpose are intentionally built into the system. In kitchens, where great chefs don't create memorable experiences. They design the conditions where they can emerge. The experience creates elegant moments designed for gathering, sharing, and celebrating human connection. In cities, where infrastructure doesn't create innovation directly, but enables millions of interactions that make innovation possible. Different environments. Different outcomes. The same design principle. What connects them isn't control. It's community. The connective tissue that enables people to trust, learn, coordinate, and accomplish things no individual could achieve alone. Great leaders don't manufacture extraordinary outcomes. They intentionally design the conditions where extraordinary outcomes emerge. That's why leadership isn't simply about making decisions. It's about designing organizations. Leaders don't command trust into existence. They intentionally design community. And when community is intentionally designed, it becomes the connective tissue that enables adaptive organizations to trust, learn, coordinate, and evolve. That's why I believe we need to think differently about community. Not as a department. Not as a platform. Not as an engagement program. But as the strategic infrastructure leaders intentionally design. When designed well, community becomes the connective tissue of adaptive organizations, enabling trust, learning, and coordinated action to flow across customers, employees, partners, and teams. As AI accelerates change, I believe the organizations that thrive won't simply have better technology. They'll build organizations that learn faster, coordinate better, and adapt continuously. I'm still refining this thinking, but it feels less like a new idea and more like a pattern I've been observing all along. As AI reshapes how organizations operate, I believe one of the defining leadership questions of the next decade will be: How do we intentionally design organizations that continuously build trust, learn, coordinate, adapt, and thrive?
