Flying Under the Radar: ASBP Production of FDP for Secure and Agile Dried Plasma Supply

In collaboration with the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP), Terumo BCT has designed a scalable, sterile freeze-dried plasma (FDP) manufacturing system that can be implemented within the ASBP's blood centers, as well as those of NATO allies and civilian partners. Likewise, Terumo BCT collaborated with warfighters to design a lightweight, rugged, and easy-to-use FDP kit for use in austere environments. Currently, the FDP manufacturing system and the FDP kit manufactured by the system are not approved in any country or available for commercial use. This data represents investigational research.
As conflicts transition from centralized battlefront engagement to distributed warfare, resources like blood products are increasingly difficult to distribute for point-of-injury care. Warfighters must rely more heavily on their immediate support teams for prolonged field care. Supplying conventional blood products like frozen plasma to far-forward positions is both logistically challenging and operationally slow, largely due to cold chain requirements and thawing. With reduced cold chain and preparation time, freeze-dried plasma (FDP) can be carried into role 1 environments to decrease time from injury to transfusion, which has been shown to lead to improved outcomes. The only FDP product currently available to select Special Operations Forces (SOF) is internationally-sourced French lyophilized plasma (FLYP), in limited quantities, which is packaged in a heavy and fragile glass bottle. Collaborating closely with the ASBP, Terumo BCT has developed a production system to enable the ASBP to make FDP domestically in a standard blood center using donated plasma as a starting material. This empowers the ASBP to meet rapidly evolving demand, simplify logistics, reduce turnaround time, scale up by adding systems, and maintain operational secrecy.

Shrink-tube medical and protective device
Issued US 8968226
See patentA therapeutic, supportive, or protective device is fabricated from a material capable of contracting in response to interacting with heat, cold, a chemical reagent, electromagnetic energy, or mechanical energy. The device is positioned over an anatomical joint or other body part and via a "shrink fit," conforms to the part, providing a customizable fit.

Motivational baseball glove
Issued US 7674195
See patentA baseball glove with integrated illumination means and circuitry that can control the pattern and timing of the illumination means to produce a lightshow. The lightshow may be triggered by the glove catching a ball, or by a separate switch. Optionally, the lightshow may be accompanied by audio signals.

BevNET Best Packaging Award

An impressive year for sales of cold-brew coffee was as impressive for package design in the fast-growing segment. For us, the European design esthetic of NuBru is exceptional among its peers. The use of different label colors and the subtle change in badges denote the different varieties clearly, while maintaining the overall feel of the brand, and, most importantly, allow NuBru to stand out on the shelf.
