Science and Technology
I discussed the technical details and history of the Common Lisp programming language, which I'd helped to develop, with the community of its users. I answered numerous questions, ranging from detailed technical questions to "getting started" questions by newcomers to the community.

I took the initiative to create the document as I felt it should be. I wrote a custom TeX to HTML translator for this specific purpose. I conceived of the HyperSpec's use as an advertising vehicle for Harlequin (originally, later rebranded for LispWorks Ltd. when the asset transfered) by making it cost-free and I guided the Harlequin legal team in making an appropriate copyright to match. The original work, done at the birth of the web in 1994, was highly innovative in a number of ways, though because of the newness of the web, it took two years to convince my company to publish it. The nature and structure of the document was designed to be enduring, as illustrated by the fact that it is still in regular use and highly regarded today, many years later.

I made numerous technical contributions to this standard, but never directly, always through the formal voting process of X3J13, the subcommittee tasked with creation of this standard. I served as the second of two Project Editors for the final four years of this decade-long project, overseeing the successful completion of an 1100-page document and its subsequent public review. Acting in the role of Project Editor, I was trusted to neutrally express a large number of interconnected decisions…
