After an inspiring, challenging, and rewarding four years, I wrapped up my time at Roblox last week.
It was an incredible privilege to work with so many talented people to bring Roblox to more device platforms, introduce new methods of communication, ship industry-first innovations in safety, and modernize our search and discovery systems to benefit our community. I’ve always gravitated toward working on complex product and technology challenges - and building a platform to serve the consumer, creator, civility, content diversity, and business needs of our multi-sided ecosystem was both exciting and brain stretching.
Reflecting on my time - beyond the fun of building with an amazing team - I experienced something less common: successfully threading a needle many companies struggle with - the ability to (1) keep running, scaling, and optimizing a successful business while (2) making big, innovative bets for the future. Roblox does this well, and I believe it's made possible by the four company values that are far more than wall art:
· Take The Long View
· Get Stuff Done
· Respect the Community
· We are Responsible
These values are deeply rooted in the company. I would hear them referenced directly in our exec staff meetings, between individuals, and among teams in daily discussion. Purposefully in tension - they drew out the right debates and actions to build a sustainable, future-proof platform to serve our community. Teams were pushed to execute quickly - as long as they had a strong, long-term vision. Builders took responsibility by pausing their own roadmaps to serve a greater good - putting Community before Company, Company before Team, and Team before the Individual. We made hard decisions that were not always popular, but the right thing to do for the long-term. Seeing these values in action was special - and something I’ll aim to replicate in the future.
While all good things end and it's always bittersweet to move on, I’m excited to see what the incredibly talented team at Roblox delivers next. Thanks to David Baszucki for creating this amazing platform and culture - and to him and
Manuel Bronstein for giving me the opportunity to help build a small part of it with them over the past few years.
With this chapter behind me, I'm taking time to explore - and it feels like there’s never been a better moment to do it than now, given how much is happening in tech. But first: some summer family travel, getting more serious about some digital + physical projects, and making room to recharge before I decide what's next. Excited to share more - when I figure it out!
