Molly Schwartz shared thisThe advancement of one of China’s AI models, Kimi, has sharpened attention on the latest US plans to counter China’s growing AI challenge. Kimi is reportedly more powerful than several US flagship models, though not yet as powerful what lies on the frontier. However, Kimi operates at a fraction of the cost per token. That cost advantage raises the competitive threat to US AI leadership more broadly, including for other leading firms in the space, and Trump is once again taking a page out of China’s playbook by cracking down on the free market and unfettered competition. With tariffs, the US sought to limit China’s influence to bolster its own struggling manufacturing sector. Now, the more immediate question is whether Washington will do the same in an attempt to maintain its lead in the AI race…and if it will be successful. Molly Schwartz shared thisAfter several days of strikes against Iran, and several morning announcements yesterday morning that strikes were set to continue, Trump announced via Truth Social that the “scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran” have been cancelled as a peace deal has been agreed upon. Indeed, “discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved…the Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this transaction is finalized — time and place of the signing to be announced shortly.” According to our recently published energy strategy report, 103 Days, 38 Peace Deals, yesterday’s announcement would constitute the 39th peace deal declared since the onset of the war. Molly Schwartz shared thisKevin Warsh has recently appointed Paul Winfree to be his advisor to support him as Fed Chair. In Project 2025, Winfree advocates for the functional abolition of the Federal Reserve altogether, claiming that “potential downsides of free banking stem from its greatest benefit: It has massive political hurdles to clear,” saying that “transitioning to free banking would require political authorities, including Congress and the President, to coordinate on multiple reforms simultaneously.” Recall that this was published in 2022—before the GOP got Trump in the White House, Bessent in the Treasury, and a majority in both Congressional Houses. Naming a self-proclaimed free banker, who supports the dissolution of the Fed, as an advisor to the Chair of the Fed sets the stage for a potential dramatic restructuring of how monetary policy is conducted in the US. Molly Schwartz shared thisIn a tense Congressional Hearing before the foreign relations committee, Marco Rubio defended the Trump Administration’s war in Iran, praising the success of US military operations destroying Iranian military and nuclear facilities. He also said that a deal with Iran could happen “today, tomorrow, or next week.” However, the recent military escalations between the US and Iran, the refusal of Israel and Hezbollah to cooperate, and Pezeshkian’s resignation— leaving Iran in the hands of the IRGC—mean that a deal seems to lie more on the horizon of next month, next quarter, or maybe even next year. Molly Schwartz shared thisMarkets laid in wait for war-related headlines yesterday after Trump truthed on Monday night that “negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran” were “proceeding nicely.” It’s also possible that “proceeding nicely” meant that the US was once again escalating to de-escalate, as hours later the US military confirmed reports of strikes against Iranian military assets, including speedboats which were laying mines in the Strait. While the news reel was sparsely populated, it did flag that the US Navy was restarting to guide ships through the Strait with a plan to help a dozen vessels through the passage in the coming days. However, minutes later a “US official” denied these claims, leaving traders, and vessels in the Strait, stranded.

Molly Schwartz shared thisWarsh has recently been confirmed as Fed chair, and while Powell has been supportive, he isn't willing to give up his seat as Governor just yet, holding himself as a bastion of the Fed's independence. But if Powell refuses to step down, that means someone else has to leave. Conversations yesterday in Beijing between Trump and XI produced a lot of headlines, but not much in the way of substance. Oh, and the Strait is still closed. Read more in today's Global Daily: Musical chairs

Molly Schwartz shared thisAre we watching policymakers “de-escalate to escalate" and “deregulate to regulate”? We've seen the US "de-escalate" by signing onto what I've referred to as the "schmeasefire," which somewhat settles military tensions for now, perhaps only to "escalate" and ramp up the offensive down the line. But what about regulation? AI and deregulation has become a central talking point from the current Administration with a singular goal of making America the best place to do business. But what about when the development of AI is too fast and too dangerous for the government to allow to grow completely unfettered? One of Trump's first measures when taking office was to undo Biden era regulatory measures targeting the AI industry, but the NYT reports that the current Administration might be rethinking that move, especially after the meeting just a few weeks ago to tackle fears that Anthropic's new Mythos model is too powerful for its own good. Signals that look supportive today may ultimately lead to tighter constraints tomorrow... • The "schmeasefire" may be less about stability and more about positioning • AI deregulation may be less about permanence and more about timing Curious how others are thinking about this. Molly Schwartz shared thisThe prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz isn't hitting everyone the same. While Europe may not be the target of any US military objective, it’s hard to argue that Washington would strongly oppose Europe feeling some of the economic collateral damage. The worse the outlook becomes, the harder it is for Europe to remain on the sidelines. Energy stress, inflation, and recession risk all make “strategic neutrality” less sustainable, and might force Europe into the mud. Question: How long can Europe afford to treat security as external while the costs arrive internally? #Geopolitics #EnergySecurity #Europe #NATO #Macroeconomics #GlobalMarkets

Molly Schwartz liked thisMolly Schwartz liked thisWhat happens when we put students in charge of implementing school phone policies? The results may surprise you. Episode 1 of the Call Me Maybe Series is out now!! Full episode: https://lnkd.in/e-F28dKT Partnering with Young Futures Org to create and direct this series, produced by Jack and Grace Productions, was so meaningful. I had the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia and learn firsthand from Daniel Merin and the welcoming community of the Office of School Climate and Culture at The School District of Philadelphia. The most salient takeaway from this story for me was the power of community and relationship building in making any policy effective. Don’t underestimate the power of trust. When students have strong relationships with their teachers and administrators, and feel that the adults around them genuinely care about their lives and experiences, they are much more likely to engage in conversation with the new policy. Rather than simply putting a policy in place, this school district took a unique approach by appointing student ambassadors to prompt dialogue among students and bring feedback back to the administration, helping create more effective and responsive policies. Daniel also taught me about restorative justice and the power of teaching students to lead community healing and conflict resolution, so needed. I hope you’ll enjoy the episode as much as we enjoyed making it. Thank you to Daniel Merin and the entire Office of School Climate Culture for welcoming us and getting to tell your important story, in addition to Young Futures team for the opportunity. Excited to hear your thoughts!

Molly Schwartz liked thisMolly Schwartz liked thisIn Bloomberg News, Vinícius Andrade and I took a look at why foreign-exchange carry strategies have been so successful this year, beating out other systematic approaches like value or momentum positions. One hypothetical carry basket -- borrowing the euro to buy the Brazilian real, Colombian peso and Turkish lira in equal parts -- is enjoying its best year to date since 2005. The high rates on offer in emerging markets don't hurt, but neither does the collapse in rates volatility (and particularly dollar volatility) this year, despite myriad macro risks. https://lnkd.in/eEi__7R9

Molly Schwartz liked thisMolly Schwartz liked thisHi friends! Just dropping by to share two things. First, since the beginning of June, I've been in Albuquerque working as an intern with the New Mexico Law Offices of the Public Defender! It's been a jam-packed and eye-opening experience, and I'm pumped to be with the office until the end of August. Second, I'll be running the Chicago Marathon again with Mercy Homes later this fall! I had a blast running with the team last year and was extremely inspired by all that the organization does throughout the greater Chicago community. Thank you to everyone who donated last year to help make that a reality!!! If you would like to support my fundraising efforts for this wonderful organization, please feel free to use the link below. Every donation helps! https://lnkd.in/geij56u3

Molly Schwartz liked thisVery pleased to have worked with Eric Rosengren on this research and to have attended the 10th Annual Macroprudential Conference at the Central Bank of Ireland, where it was presented. Thank you to the organizers for an outstanding conference.Molly Schwartz liked thisIt was our privilege to host the 10th Annual Macroprudential Conference at our Dockland Campus this week in conjunction with De Nederlandsche Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank and Sveriges riksbank. During the two-day conference, global experts provided attendees with fresh research, and discussed many of the major policy issues facing macroprudential and supervisory authorities. These included: ➡ Stablecoins ➡ Interconnections between banks and non-bank financial intermediaries ➡ The simplification debate in bank regulation ➡ The move of cryptocurrencies towards mainstream finance ➡ The global payments system and the role of correspondent banking ➡ Quantitative easing and the impact of interest rate increases on banks We would like to thank all of the contributors for such enriching conversations, and we look forward to the 2027 conference in Stockholm.

Molly Schwartz liked thisMolly Schwartz liked thisTRUMP: "For me, the memorandum of understanding is over. I don't want to deal with them anymore. They're scum. And if they get a nuclear weapon.. They're liars.. In my eyes, it's a waste of time to continue talking to them. They're crazy, for me it's over." So, will we see a new 🇺🇸 blockade; efforts to keep Hormuz open by force; 🇮🇷 hits at the GCC; 🇺🇸 & 🇮🇱 strikes on 🇮🇷; and 🇮🇱 vs Hezbollah… or do we back off by Friday… and wait until after the midterms to do the same? The latter is still our base case for now, but we are watching closely. One can hopefully also see why we assume an eventual return to fighting rather than singing kumbaya round a fire.

Two ISM releases this week, and from what I can see, two more reasons the Fed will be in no rush to cut rates. 🏭 Manufacturing (February): We noted in our commentary on Monday that the prices paid index surged to 70.5 — the highest since June 2022. Backlogs hit their strongest level since mid-2022 as well. 🏢 Services (February): Just out this morning and an even stronger print. The index rose to 56.1 — also a multi-year high. Prices remain elevated at 63.0, reflecting persistent cost pressures in labour, technology, and contracted services. The common thread across both releases: demand is holding up and price pressures are either stubbornly high or picking up. If these are accurate reflections of the economy, it’s difficult to see the case for imminent rate cuts. https://lnkd.in/erPruhMF
