I’ve been using a side project to bring my Java skills fully up to date with the latest tooling. On the dev side it’s Java 25, Spring Boot 4, Maven, Flyway for DB migrations, JaCoCo for test coverage, and Testcontainers for integration tests, so the whole GitHub CI pipeline is on current versions. For runtime I’m running everything in Docker with PostgreSQL 18, Redis 8, and RabbitMQ 4 via Docker Compose, which keeps the stack consistent and easy to spin up. The UI is Thymeleaf and Bootstrap (yeah I know that's a bad idea - it's purely to keep the whole thing in a single repo for this demo). Normally I’d use a separate frontend (e.g. React or similar) and keep the backend as an API. It’s a flash-sales–style demo app (products, sales, orders, async processing with RabbitMQ, caching with Redis). If you’re raising up your Java/Spring stack knowledge, then building something real with this kind of setup is a great way to do it.
