Today, we celebrate the birth of our nation and the 250th anniversary of American independence. As we reflect on this historic milestone, we also recognize the printers whose work helped make it possible. Printers reproduced and distributed the Declaration of Independence, shared the ideas of liberty and self-government, and helped connect citizens across the colonies during a pivotal moment in history. For 250 years, printing has remained an essential part of American life, supporting commerce, education, manufacturing, communication, and community engagement. While the technology has evolved, the mission remains the same: to inform, educate, communicate, and connect. God Bless America! My Independence Day thoughts - To those who think that any mention of God or display of reverence for our divine Creator should be stripped from all aspects of our public lives, including schools, courthouses and capitol buildings, it may be beneficial to remember the words of some of our forefathers. Just two days after members of Congress passed the First Amendment, they asked President George Washington to declare a National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer. In response to this request from Congress, President Washington issued a proclamation on October 3, 1789. In it he said, "The smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained." John Adams, our equally illustrious second President, said, "It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation's humble acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence." Thomas Jefferson said, "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time." President Andrew Jackson said, "The Bible is a rock upon which our republic rests." In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln expressed his gratitude upon receiving a copy of the Bible by saying, "In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Saviour gave to the world was communicated through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong." In more recent times, we fondly remember President Ronald Reagan's famous quote, "If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under." Reagan also said "Freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule of law under God is acknowledged." President Clinton said "Part of our essential humanity is paying respect to what God gave us and what will be here a long time after we're gone." President George W. Bush said, "I believe that God has planted in every heart the desire to live in freedom." And finally, the late Reverend Billy Graham's wise counsel tells us that "Unless we can turn to God and have His help, we are done for as a nation and a people." America was built by men and women inspired by God and His principles; principles that have guided and sustained us as a nation for 250 years. And if we hope to have any chance of surviving as a nation, we must return to those divine principles with haste, purpose and conviction. Throughout my career, I've occasionally heard someone say that paper and print is dead. I've always found that interesting, because if you want proof that paper and print is very much alive, look no further than one of the most important and influential documents in our history. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence gave written voice to a revolutionary idea: that all people are created equal, with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Now, 250 years later, those words on paper still persist today. They remind us that America was born from courage, conviction, and the belief that freedom is always worth protecting. This Independence Day, as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we do so with a deep appreciation for those who came before us, especially the men and women of our armed forces who have selflessly defended the freedoms we so richly enjoy. Because of their service and sacrifice, we are able to gather with family and friends, celebrate openly, speak freely, and live in pursuit of the promise first written on that piece of paper a quarter of a millennium ago. And on this 250th birthday of our great nation, perhaps the best gift we could have received is the world at our doorstep. As one of the hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, America has welcomed our brothers and sisters from across the globe into our airports, our cities, restaurants, neighborhoods, and stadiums. They have arrived with passports, songs, chants, flags, and cheers, reminding us that humanity transcends beyond compare and knows no border. Sometimes it takes the wonder of a guest to remind the homeowner of the beauty within their own home. That is what we are currently witnessing as people from all corners of the world fall in love with our people, our cities, our states, and our country. It just might have taken strangers coming to our shores, experiencing America for the very first time, to remind us of the greatness that has always defined this nation. Through their eyes, we are seeing that America continues to remain a beacon to the world. Not because she is perfect, but because she continues to be awe-inspiring. Because she continues to welcome with open arms. Because she continues to offer hope, opportunity, and promise. That is America 250. That is the America we should all yearn to be part of and carry forward to the future. That people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, races, beliefs, sexual orientations, and nations can come together. That respect still matters. That what unites us is far greater than what divides us. Over the last several weeks, it has been clearly evident that no politician, government, or force of power is stronger than that of the people. Humanity is all we have, and it always wins. We are the true champions; we just have to bring ourselves to believing that once again. Happy 250th Birthday, America!
