The rest will follow.” Sounds simple enough—do the thing, fail, learn, keep going. But what if you never make it past do? What if you’re so afraid of failing that you never even start? What if giving the wrong answer costs you your job? I’ve had friends who flew too close to the sun—brilliant, capable, but haunted by imposter syndrome. Every day they thought, "Today’s the day they’ll realize I don’t belong here." I’ve been there too. And here’s the thing—a job is just a chapter in your life — maybe just a sentance, not the whole book. 📖 🔹 In your 20s, failure is a privilege—you’re figuring things out, bouncing back, trying new things. 🔹 In your 30s and 40s, failure gets heavier. Responsibilities stack up—mortgages, family, stability. The risks feel bigger. But staying stuck? That’s an even bigger risk. And even if you played it safe in your 20s—never took big leaps, never failed big—it’s never too late to start now. The real world doesn’t grade you like school did. No red Xs. No GPA. Just lessons, experiences, and another shot. 🎯 💡 A wise person once told me: "There are no wrong decisions. There’s just a decision—and that’s more than some people are willing to make." So forget the shame school taught you about failure and rejection. ❌ Adulthood isn’t about getting everything right—it’s about failing over and over again until you fail less… or at least fail softer. You get better at recovering. You learn how to land without breaking. You keep going. So maybe the real question isn’t “What if I fail?” but “What if I never try?”

☁️Michelle Pham posted this🚗 Being an Individual Contributor (IC) is Like Being a GPS—But Let’s Be Real About It 🗺️ A lot of people think being an individual contributor (IC) means sitting and waiting for leadership and management to hand down decisions. But that’s not it. Not even close. Think of it this way—leadership picks the destination, but YOU are the GPS. You’re the one figuring out the turn-by-turn directions, spotting traffic ahead, and sometimes recalculating the route when things don’t go as planned. What an IC is NOT: ❌ A task rabbit, blindly following orders. ❌ Someone waiting for every single step to be spelled out. ❌ Stuck in a vacuum, disconnected from the bigger picture. What an IC IS: ✅ A problem solver—figuring out how to get to the goal. ✅ A strategist—spotting roadblocks before they become full-blown detours. ✅ A leader in their own right—executing without needing constant hand-holding (So act like it). ✅ Brave enough to communicate—and, more importantly, ask questions when needed. 🚦 But here’s the key—don’t panic at every wrong turn. Not every bump in the road is an emergency. A great IC knows when to flag an issue and when to navigate through it. Over-escalating slows everything down, but staying silent when something is off? That’s how people end up lost. Want to be a stronger IC? 🔹 Look up before the sky is falling. Stay aware of the bigger picture—don’t just wait for chaos to pay attention. 🔹 Talk to people. Other teams and leadership have insights that can save you a LOT of headaches. Learn their needs, pain points, and priorities - people truly don't bite when they are on a screen. 🔹 Don’t assume leadership has the full picture. When you’re the one paving the road, you see the cracks and detours others don’t. Speak up before a pothole becomes a sinkhole. 🔹 Take notes. Seriously. Learn from what works and what doesn’t so you’re not reinventing the wheel every time. Leadership and management set the vision, but great ICs bring it to life. You’re not just along for the ride—you’re figuring out the best way to get there. Now… are you the GPS that gets people there smoothly, or the one that says “Recalculating” every five minutes? (AKA my worst nightmare on a a roadtrip) 😅

☁️Michelle Pham posted thisLeadership, Ownership, and the Weight of Decision-Making Yesterday, I had the chance to chat with Steampunk’s CEO Matt Warren and COO John Harllee and in the chaos that is 2025, I don’t take that for granted. We covered a lot—servant leadership, decision-making, company culture, staying motivated—but a few things really stuck with me. 🔹 Servant leadership prevents bottlenecks. In most traditional companies, decisions get stuck in endless escalations. By the time they trickle down, they’re delayed, diluted, or completely lost. Steampunk flips that. Leadership here isn’t about hoarding control—it’s about empowering employees to step up and own their impact 💡, so things actually move instead of stalling out in bureaucracy. 🔹 Real leadership is making decisions—and owning them. Everyone wants the title until it’s time to carry the weight of responsibility ⚖️. (Maybe that’s why decision get escalated?) Decisions aren’t just about the wins; they come with risks, trade-offs, and collateral. And too few people want to step up when things get tough. As the saying goes, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown.” 👑 🔹 Take notes. No, seriously. One of the most underrated things a leader can do? Write down what works and what doesn’t. 📝 You won’t remember everything, and if you ever build something of your own, those notes will be priceless. The patterns of success and failure are always there—you just have to pay attention. Steampunk’s motto is “Design. Disrupt. Repeat.” 🔄 And if you think about it, that’s exactly what Silicon Valley did—not just to tech, but to how we live. Maybe this is how government contracting gets its own shake-up. 💫

The other day, I was walking through the streets of San Francisco when I happened upon a book with a title along the lines of 4,000 Weeks. And it hit me—that’s all we get. 4,000 weeks. It sounds like a lot, but when you break it down? It’s barely enough time to figure things out. • First ~200 weeks? Learning to walk, talk, and exist. • 700 weeks in school? Spent figuring out math, grammar, and how to survive awkward teenage years. • College (another 200 weeks)? Prepping for the “real world.” By the time you graduate, over 1,000 weeks are gone. Then, if you work until 65? That’s another 2,000 weeks spent working. Even if you make it to 122 (the longest recorded lifespan), that’s only 6,300 weeks total—and it still wouldn’t feel like enough. And if you have kids? You really only get around 936 weeks with them before they turn 18. That’s if you’re lucky. Some move out sooner. Some drift away later. But for most parents, those first 18 years are the bulk of the time you’ll ever spend with them. Then they build their own lives. They get busy. You get busy. And suddenly, you’re not seeing them every day. Maybe it’s just holidays, occasional visits. The weeks dwindle down before you even realize they’re gone. So think about it: • How many of those 936 weeks have already passed? • How many were spent fully present? • How many were spent distracted, doom scrolling, or too drained from work? And beyond that—what about you? • How many weeks are left for your dreams, your joy, your experiences? • How many are spent grinding away at something you don’t love? • How many are just you, alone, lost in your own thoughts? We all get the same 168 hours a week, but how we spend them is up to us. The dream, the risk, the change you keep pushing off—it’s not waiting for you. Every week spent in a life you don’t love is a week you don’t get back. Yes, responsibilities are real. But so is the reality that time doesn’t pause. The question is, are you spending your weeks the way you truly want to? So start the thing. Take the risk. Make the change. Because life is short, but you don’t have to make it smaller than it is. From Immigrant Roots to Tech Innovation I come from an immigrant family who only has ever worked in the beauty or hospitality industry and could never prepare me for the corporate world. I took a path as diverse as my taste in music 🎶. I have worked in hospitals, hotels, restaurants, government agencies, tech startups, janitorial services—even the automotive industry you name it I’ve tried it. Each job felt like a detour - no closer to where I wanted to be and took an emotional and mental toll, but looking back, I realize: ✅ No job is too small—it’s how you show up that matters. ✅ No title defines your potential—your actions do. ✅ No path is wasted—every step prepares you for what’s next. And the biggest lesson? No label should limit the value you bring. Titles change. Industries shift. But one thing stays the same—your ability to solve problems, create impact, and keep pushing forward. They didn’t just give me a job—they invested in me, supported my growth, and recognized my hustle. From Jeju’s volcanic shores to Kyoto’s ancient streets, this trip has been full of surprises, challenges, and little reminders that life is always working in my favor—it just depends on how I choose to see it. Take Jeju, for example. Some might have called it a snowstorm ❄️, but to me, it was a winter wonderland. The island, usually green and rugged, was wrapped in white, turning every moment into something surreal. Had we left a day later, we would’ve been stranded and missed the next leg of our journey. But timing worked out. Life has a funny way of pushing you forward exactly when you need it. Then there was Kyoto and Mount Inari. I started the climb expecting the famous torii gate path ⛩️, but somehow, I got lost and ended up on a steep, unmarked trail. It was quiet, isolating, and far from what I imagined. When I finally reached the peak, there was no grand view—just a small shrine honoring people and gods alike. But standing there, exhausted and proud, I realized I didn’t need a view. The climb itself, the fact that I made it despite the unexpected detour, was the real reward. This trip has mirrored so much of my life. The journey isn’t always smooth, the path isn’t always clear, and sometimes the peak isn’t what you expect. But every challenge, every detour, every twist in the road has led me somewhere meaningful. Every temple I visited, every fortune I pulled, promised great luck ahead—and you know what? I believe it. No matter what life throws my way, I know it’s working for me, not against me. It’s all about perspective. And as I soak in these last few days in Tokyo 🏙️, I feel excited for whatever comes next. Because even when the path is uncertain, I know I’ll find my way—just like I always have. 💫

I've watched this happen up close, so let me tell you what that actually means. She started this program with a two-year-old, a newborn, and a husband who had just launched a company and was finishing his own master's degree. She crossed the finish line with a third child born somewhere in the middle, grant funding secured, and first-author publications to her name. Her research advances our understanding of how parental engagement and presence shape outcomes for children in pediatric cardiac units. That is not abstract work. That is the kind of knowledge that changes what happens in some of the hardest rooms a family will ever sit in. She is now in full stride as a fellow at Nemours Children's Health, doing exactly what she set out to do. I am in awe of her. Always have been. Dr. Ashleigh Harlow, PhD, RN. It fits. Shout-out to her parents who have been shaped her life in many wonderful ways: Drew Butgereit and Leigh Butgereit.

He previously served with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, where he supported U.S. agricultural engagement abroad and worked closely with a wide range of public and private stakeholders. This weekend at the EO Raleigh Durham annual event, Brandon Smith and I found ourselves staring at a literal barrier: the outfield wall of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. We took a risk and walked onto the field and then saw another opportunity - the OG scoreboard. Most people would have checked the "compliance box" and stayed in the stands or the climate controlled PNC Triangle Club. Instead, Brandon took the shot. He addressed the guard directly - no fluff, no entitlement, and found a human solution to what we perceived would be a rigid rule. Five minutes later, we and our spouses were inside one of the very last manual scoreboards in MLB or MiLB baseball. We were looking out at the diamond with our heads sticking out of the scoreboard and Brandon jokingly reminded me "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take". Looking back this renewed my sense of looking out things from the outside again. Here is what that moment reminded me about the current state of IT in the regulated industries we serve: - Direct Communication Trumps Red Tape: We often hide behind "process" because we’re afraid of a 'No.' In reality, the person guarding the gate (or the program office) usually just wants to know you're competent and respectful of their domain. - The View is Better from the Inside: You can’t understand a system by reading the manual from the bleachers. You have to get into the guts of the legacy hardware, whether it’s a 1900s-style scoreboard or a COBOL mainframe, to see how it actually functions. - Outcomes Over Optics: The "safe" choice was to stay at the cocktail table. The "mission" choice was to explore the unique environment we were in. Most federal projects fail because teams are too scared to deviate from a flawed plan, even when a better path is staring them in the face. - The Power of the Network: The EO community reminds us that entrepreneurship isn't about following the rules—it's about knowing which rules are actually safety rails and which are just paint on the floor. If your current contract feels like you're stuck in the stands watching a slow-motion failure, it’s time to stop complaining about the "guards" and start engaging them. #GovCon #FederalIT #IvorySkies #EORaleighDurham #DigitalTransformation #LeadershipDevelopment
