Last week, I had the privilege of visiting two of the most transformative manufacturing sites in the U.S. mobility ecosystem — Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) and the adjacent Hyundai–LG Battery Manufacturing facility.
Walking through HMGMA felt like stepping into the future of automotive manufacturing. This is Hyundai Motor Group’s first dedicated mass‑production EV plant in the United States, built on a 2,284‑acre campus near Savannah, Georgia. The scale is extraordinary — more than 16 million square feet of factory floor space, designed as a highly connected, AI‑optimized smart factory where order collection, procurement, logistics, and production flow seamlessly through data‑driven automation.
Seeing the production lines for the Hyundai IONIQ 5, IONIQ 9, and Kia Sportage HEV - supported by advanced robotics and human‑centered automation was a powerful reminder of how quickly our industry is evolving. HMGMA is built to produce capacity of 500,000 EVs and hybrid vehicles annually across Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands.
Right next door, the Hyundai–LG Energy Solution battery plant is producing battery cells as part of a multi‑billion‑dollar joint venture that will supply next‑generation EV batteries directly into the manufacturing ecosystem. This vertically integrated model — EV assembly + battery production on a single mega‑site — is redefining speed, efficiency, and sustainability in U.S. automotive manufacturing.
What impressed me most wasn’t just the technology — it was the vision of HMG and the commitment of leadership and team members who proudly call themselves Meta Pros. The commitment to AI‑enabled robotic automation, connected ecosystems, workforce development partnerships, and community investment is setting a new benchmark for what modern manufacturing can be. A truly inspiring visit — and a glimpse into the future of manufacturing.
