Matt Levin reacted on thisMatt Levin reacted on this18 years ago on this day, I lost my mother. She was only 48. She had late-stage cancer. During her final months, she was on her third line of chemotherapy. It probably wasn't the right choice. But we pursued it anyway because we completely misread the signals from her oncologist. The aggressive treatment significantly deteriorated her quality of life. Perhaps, choosing peace over suffering would have been the right trade-off. I've spent years wondering: why is it so hard for doctors to communicate this? No family should have to lose that time to a miscommunication. My mother also had Parkinson's disease. We waited months for her to see a neurologist. There simply weren't enough of them. When she passed, she left behind my younger brother, eight years old, diagnosed with autism and Down syndrome. I chose to become his caregiver. That lived experience made me realize how broken the system is. Many of you know this system. You've fought it for someone you love. Receiving appropriate accommodations and interventions within schools requires full-time advocacy. Schools simply do not have adequate resources to serve everyone. My decades of work on Parkinson's disease, end-of-life care modeling, and autism are not a portfolio, but a family history. Drawing motivation from lived experience liberates you from external validation. When rejection comes — and it comes to all of us — you simply love the work anyway. If you're in a season of rejection right now, I'd ask: would you still be passionate about this work even if you had everything you wanted? That answer is usually the fuel. Eighteen years later, my mother still shapes my path. That sense of purpose is something I never had to search for. If you haven't yet found work that feels this way, keep looking. And if you have, protect it.

Matt Levin liked thisMatt Levin liked thisOn Capitol Hill today as part of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) delegation, making the case for sustained investment in science and technology directly to the people who shape it. Met with staffers from Senators Gillibrand and Schumer, and with Congressman Joe Morelle, who represents Rochester and Monroe County — my academic home. They were heartened to hear how our work has tangibly improved lives, for those living with autism, severe anxiety, PTSD, neurodegenerative disease, and other conditions that affect how people connect with the world around them. As someone who works at the intersection of US and Saudi innovation, I see firsthand how much the world looks to American science for leadership. Advocacy is a big part of our job. Hope to do it more.

Matt Levin liked thisMatt Levin liked thisWe just published a new blog on the Uber Engineering site about how we tackled GPU starvation and reproducibility in our deep learning pipelines. When we saw our high-performance GPU utilization sitting at 10-15%, the "obvious" answers were wrong. It wasn't the model architecture or the network speed. It was a double-bottleneck: - The I/O Tax: Paying the network cost to fetch Parquet files from HDFS every single epoch. - The "Translation" Wall: Even with data local, the CPU was maxing out converting PyArrow objects into NumPy tensors just-in-time for the GPU. By moving these transformations to the worker pool and implementing a local FanoutCache for pre-processed tensors, we boosted utilization to 60%+ and cut training time from 22 hours down to 3. I recently joined Demetrios Brinkmann on the MLOps community to tell the "unfiltered" version of this story—including the detective work, the failed experiments, and the hidden race conditions. Incredibly grateful for the opportunity and the profound professional evolution this journey has offered me. When I was a high-performance IC, my definition of impact = logic + efficiency. However, moving into leadership has taught me that making impacts is far more than that—it’s about building the right environment for people and business to thrive. Reflecting on these three years, here are the pillars that have reshaped my mindset: 🤯 Understanding the Ecosystem: Success is found at the intersection of the problem space, the people, and the organizational environment. To truly move the needle, you have to understand the "why" behind stakeholders and the "how" of a partnership. 🤓 Enabling Unique Success Paths: Leadership isn't about training reports to reproduce the successes I had as an IC. It’s about identifying the unique strengths of each person and enabling them to build their own paths. In practice, respecting difference is much harder than it sounds; we are naturally inclined toward those who think like us, but true innovation requires us to embrace the perspectives that challenge our own. 🥵 Embracing Necessary Conflict: conflict isn’t something to be avoided or ashamed of. Often, facing or even creating healthy friction is necessary for accountability and clarity. It’s a tool for growth and alignment, not a sign of failure. 💪 The Bravery of Accountability: Being a manager is significantly more complex than being an IC. It requires the courage to make decisions in uncertain environments, take full accountability for the team’s outcomes, and remain steady when the pressure is high. I am deeply thankful for the mentors, partners, and especially my team, who have challenged and supported me. Here’s to many more years of learning, leading, and building together. 🥂

Matt Levin liked thisMatt Levin liked thisSharing a recent update on our team's work on Meta’s Generative Ads Recommendation Model (GEM), which is a breakthrough LLM-scale foundation model that utilizes a novel architecture to achieve 4x greater efficiency in driving ad performance compared to previous systems. It has been highlighted in Meta's Q4 earning call: "In Q4, we doubled the number of GPUs we used to train our GEM model for ads ranking. We also adopted a new sequence learning model architecture, which is capable of using longer sequences of user behavior and processing much richer information about each piece of content". Their ambition. DaanVeda 2.0 is the result of that listening. This updated version brings together a unified platform encompassing fundraising intelligence, agentic automations, an email marketing suite, CRM, an L&D platform, and a donation management system. The goal is simple: Streamline fundraising operations and help teams focus on impact, not admin. We completed our first year of operations a couple of weeks ago, and this launch marks a significant milestone in how far we’ve come. During this time, our platform has registered over 1 million events, with 450+ NGOs onboarded across 5 countries. 💫 I’m incredibly proud of this small, driven team that chose to build thoughtfully and deeply for the sector.
