Mark Harbott liked thisMark Harbott liked thisIt was an honor this week to host a special faculty meeting for our Department of Pediatrics to celebrate the remarkable leadership and legacy of our retiring Baylor College of Medicine President, CEO, and Executive Dean, Dr. Paul Klotman . One of the highlights of the afternoon was a thoughtful conversation led by a panel of five pediatrics physician leaders, who interviewed him on topics spanning leadership, career reflections, lessons learned, and advice for the future of academic medicine. The discussion was candid, inspiring, and filled with wisdom gained through decades of service and leadership. It was especially meaningful to bring our faculty together in this way — to reflect on the impact of visionary leadership, celebrate a career dedicated to advancing healthcare and education, and connect across generations of physician leaders. Grateful for the opportunity to honor his many contributions to our college and the countless lives and careers he has influenced along the way. Mark Harbott reacted on thisMark Harbott reacted on thisToday, we celebrated the retirement of my mother, Dr Kay Guntupalli after 52 years of dedicated practice as a physician and critical care specialist. Few people have had a career as remarkable as hers. Some of her significant milestones include: 1) Becoming the first woman to receive tenure at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Medicine. 2) Being the first Asian American and woman to serve as president of the American College of Chest Physicians. 3) Training over 300 fellows in pulmonary and critical care. Congratulations to her on a glorious career and for her many decades of service!

Mark Harbott liked thisMark Harbott liked thisWe’re proud to announce Dr. Jaime Ortiz, M.D., MBA, DABMA, FASA has joined Albany Medical Center as chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Ortiz brings expertise in regional anesthesia, acute pain management, and medical acupuncture, a non-invasive option helpful in reducing post-operative nausea and for patients with acute pain. He specializes in ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks. Building on his work developing clinical research infrastructure to support faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Ortiz plans to grow the research program through collaboration with surgical colleagues. https://lnkd.in/er2hid92

Not only did our ranking increase but our overall funding amount increased in 2025 by 3% which is truly remarkable. This recognition reflects the relentless dedication of our investigators, the vision of our research leaders, and the collaboration of teams across disciplines who work every day to advance discovery and improve the lives of children. Achievements like this are not accidental — they are built through curiosity, rigor, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to science. It was a highlight of my week last week to celebrate our incredible research teams on this hard earned ranking. Effective today, Will Parsons, MD, PhD has been appointed Chief of the Division of Hematology–Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Director of the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center. A nearly two-decade member of the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital Children’s Hospital community, Dr. Parsons is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics and holds the Beverly and Daniel C. Arnold Endowed Chair for Precision Medicine. He has served in numerous impactful leadership roles across the department, division, and cancer center Including Deputy Director of the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center, Director of the Center for Precision Oncology, and Director of the Pediatrician-Scientist Pediatric Residency Program to name a few. Dr. Parsons is a nationally and internationally recognized physician-scientist, with his leadership extending beyond our institution through service on the NIH Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network Steering Committee and the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Counselors, among other national roles. Over the past year, Dr. Parsons has demonstrated steady, engaged leadership and a clear strategic vision, guiding the division through a period of transition while advancing excellence in clinical care, research, and education. He will play a key role in ongoing collaboration with the Kinder Children’s Cancer Center. I am thrilled to continue working with Dr. Parsons in this role and look forward to what lies ahead.
